March Is National Eye Donor Month

Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley (LEBDV) is a charter member of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), the nationally recognized accrediting body for Eye Banks. Established in 1961, EBAA  is the oldest transplant association in the United States.

Each year since 1983, EBAA has promoted March as National Eye Donor Month to raise awareness of the need to donate eyes, and to celebrate donors and corneal recipients. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Eye Donor Month, and since then a member of Congress has read a proclamation into the Congressional Record each March to note this special occasion.

This year, Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Representative Joseph Pitts (R-PA) will enter proclamations into the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively, proclaiming March 2012 as National Eye Donor Month.

"Tremendous advances have been made in eye, tissue and organ transplantation in recent years, offering the hope of life and significant quality of life improvements for many individuals," says Jim Quirk, Eye Bank President.  "Yet, much remains to be done to overcome the shortage in supply of donated organs and to ensure continued availability of donated eyes and other tissues for patients.Telling your family your wishes is a good first step in helping those in need of a transplant. Also, designating  yourself  as a donor on your driver's license is another way to help your family through any important end-of-life decisions."

Medical Director Spotlight:

Dr. Sadeer B. Hannush, Ophthalmologist

In Philadelphia Magazine "Top Docs" issues, Dr. Hannush was chosen by his peers as one of the best in his specialty. Other honors include:

  • American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award and the distinctive Senior Achievement Award
  • Wills Eye Institute (world renowned for developing innovative ophthalmology techniques) Excellence in Teaching Award
  • Harvard University School of Medicine - Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
  • The Cornea Society (an international organization recognized as an authoritative resource for governmental and ophthalmic agencies) Scientific Program Chair

Dr. Hannush insists that none of these accolades would be possible without the generosity of donors and donor families who give others the Gift of Sight.  He proudly displays his own driver's license with "Organ Donor" designation.

His specialties include full and partial thickness corneal transplantation (endothelial replacement), complex cataract and anterior segment reconstructive procedures including permanent keratoprosthesis (artificial cornea), and laser vision correction.  He recently shared his expertise in modern corneal transplantation techniques as an invited lecturer in China, Austria and the United Arab Emirates.

A Wayne State University Medical School graduate, he completed his residency at George Washington University and fellowship training in corneal and refractive surgery at Emory University.

Dr. Hannush is an attending surgeon on the Cornea Service at the Wills Eye Institute and assistant professor of ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College. He is Medical Director of the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley.

Dr. Hannush on a recent humanitarian mission organized by Tenwek Hospital in Kenya examines a patient pre-operatively.
