Last month, we started a three-part series suggesting behaviors you should try to avoid at the bridge table. In part 1, we talked about managing the cards--don't pull cards early as a player or dummy and don't snap cards on the table. 

This month, in part 2 of the series, we talk about things not to do that involving talking at the table.

Tip #1: At matchpoints, don't spend an excessive (or any) amount of time analyzing and discussing the traveler. It wastes precious time you need to play the next board and your discussion, which might be overheard by other players, can benefit the opponents. "Traveler analysis," which can be premature and inaccurate, can create tension between partners when they would be better off moving on the next board.

Tip #2: Don't obsess, discuss, or agonize over the previous boards. It's too late to do anything about them, so move on. Often, you make it hard on yourself by thinking about something you did. If that's the case, try to put it our of your mind and do better going forward. Sometimes, it's your partner who can't let things go. If your partner insists on making a comment or engaging you in some way, politely reply, "let's talk about it after the game." See Tip #1.

Tip #3: Don't criticize your partner during a game. Constructive discussions afterward can help improve your play and partnership, but do nothing productive in the middle of a match. Don't become your partner's third opponent at the table by making unhelpful comments--ever. If you have been on the receiving end of an unwelcome comment, you know how important this advice really is. See Tip #2.
