Thai Yoga Workshop Review

YogaAll those who attended the Thai Yoga Therapy Massage Workshop at Yoga Upstairs on January 23rd were treated to over an hour of stretching, twisting, soothing and pure joy.

Instructors Kineret Sherman and Paula Fortunato provided participants with expert instruction and playful inspiration.

The workshop was arranged so that each participant gave and received bodywork with a partner. Kineret and Paula expertly modeled postures and guided the class step-by-step. My experience was delightful, and the smiling faces and soulful moans suggested all present felt the same.

I have had the wonderful experience of a private session with Kineret Sherman and recommend her and Paula to anyone who might want to experience this ancient and healing therapy.

Winter Recipe

soupA classic Italian soup that is a meal unto itself, this is a nice hearty winter soup to warm you up on the coldest of days. It can be made in a variety of ways, just add your favorite vegetables and enjoy!

Minestrone Soup

 soup ingredients

Rinse beans.  Place beans and water in large pot.  Bring to boil, cover and let sit 1 hour.  Pre-heat oven to broil.  Remove lid from pot, add olive oil, peppercorns and sage. Bring to boil, then simmer until beans are soft and liquid is thick, 3 hours or more.

While beans are cooking, set tomatoes cut-side down on oiled baking dish in single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt.  Broil tomatoes about 6" from heat until they begin to char, about 5 minutes.  Turn over with a spatula and broil until browned.  Remove skins; they will probably fall apart.  Save liquid.

Heat heavy, wide pot to medium.  Saute vegetables one at a time.  As onions saute, cut up carrots.  As carrots saute, cut up celery and then zucchini.  Add 2 - 3 cups of beans and tomatoes with liquid to sautéed vegetables.  Simmer for 20 - 30 minutes.

Salt to taste.  Serve.

Makes 6 - 8 cups.

Pookies

Pookie's Westlake Thai

900 Hampshire Road, Suite X

Westlake Village

On a casual stroll through the Westlake Village Water Court, one might be surprised to see this little gem situated on a corner in the lower west end. The setting seems perfect - tucked away in a quiet business park, the lights inside as welcoming and warm as discovering your home after a long cold walk.

Surrounded by perfectly manicured plants and a little stream and bridges, you wonder why there aren't more restaurants here. The owners, previously occupying a sushi bar in the same complex, realize the unique setting and create an atmosphere that is extremely comfortable yet decidedly "Westlake elegant."

The menu at Pookie's is reasonably priced, and familiar to Thai lovers, yet expansive and creative enough to keep you interested in coming back to explore time and again.

Plenty of vegetarian options are available, plus most meat dishes can be substituted with steamed tofu or fresh veggies. A favorite item is the Jade Curry with vegetables, which served with brown rice proves to be a hearty and luxurious dinner. The service has always been incredible.

Perhaps the best thing about this restaurant is the multitude of purposes it can serve. I've brought family from out of town to show off a slice of the local "vibe" of Thousand Oaks, I've had serious conversation-heavy dinners with old friends, and I've enjoyed lively wine & dinner nights with close friends. Pookie's always seems to lend itself to whatever kind of dining experience I desire from it, making it an excellent restaurant all around.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga:  The Hidden Language:  Symbols, Secrets and Metaphor

by Swami Sivananda Radha (1911-1995)

This book is a must for all Yogis and Yoginis. It explores the deeper meanings of yoga; the things you probably won't hear about in class.

Swami Radha is regarded as one of the most profound and practical spiritual leaders of the 20th century. She is the author of more than 10 books on yoga and founder of the Yasodhara Ashram as well as Ascent Magazine. She is an amazing woman, and well worth learning more about. In 2007, a 20th anniversary edition of the work was released (although I personally loved the original cover).

Enjoy this wonderful treasure of a book!
