Yoga & Massage Techniques - A Unique Relationship

Massage

 By Paul Bodhise DC. CMT

Yoga postures and massage are closely related. When applied, they both simultaneously affect the whole body including the muscles, skeletal frame, connective tissues, ligaments, tendons and internal organs. Today we will introduce you to three massage techniques that I recommend to prevent injuries, treat and invigorate the whole body for those who practice yoga.

Thai Massage

Known in  Thailand as "ancient/traditional massage", Thai massage originated in India and is based on Ayurveda and Yoga. The technique combines massage with yoga-like positions during the course of the massage. The Northern style of Thai massage emphasizes stretching, while the Southern style emphasizes acupressure.

Deep Connective Tissue Massage

Deep connective tissue massage is a form of intense massage that aims to release connective tissue adhesions causing severe restrictions in the body, and to break up any restrictive scar tissue. It has also been known to help relieve chronic tension, increase range of motion, improve posture and enhance the natural harmony of the body and mind.

Deep Pressure Massage

Deep pressure massage differs from deep connective tissue massage in that it focuses on all layers of muscle tissue, including the deeper layers - hence the name "deep pressure massage" or "deep tissue massage."

Deep Pressure Massage incorporates a combination of massage modalities using slow strokes and deep, focused pressure to pick up, push through and deeply soothe and balance your muscle, fascia and connective tissues. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate crystallized waste deposits deeply embedded in deeper tissue layers. It calms the autonomic nervous system, relieves muscle tension and restores tonality to muscle tissues. Deep pressure massage may be applied to the whole body or used on a specific area of complaint.

Yoga and Massage, they've been going together for thousands of years.

Namaste.

Eloise's Recommendations

The maladies of the winter months can be warded off with some simple tips of precaution.
Keep the refined sugars out of the diet and lower the mucus forming foods which include white bread, puddings, pastas, cheese, scrambled eggs and orange juice.

Also keep yourself built up with warm foods such as spices, a variety of cooked vegetables, rotate vegetables and build your blood up!
The following soup will assist in strengthening you for the coming winter months.  You may add more of one vegetable than another depending on your personal needs.

Enjoy!
