Well, winter is now just about over, and I am now thinking about boats full time ( sort of anyway). I will have a few jobs going before the boats get in the water. I have clients who have me do some work on their boats, such as changing oil and recommissioning from winter to summer use.
One of the most important things that I have done to each of my boats during the last few years is to have the rigging changed. The rigging was changed on the Sarah Maria in 2010, and on the Bella Donna in 2011.
Up front it is something that can go for years without notice, suddenly you look, and it just does not seem safe. The rig may never come falling down however in my business I cannot afford that risk.
According to Kevin Montaque at Northeast Rigging, if the rigging on your boat is over 15 years old it is past its day and should be replaced.
The added benefit to having new rigging, is that I have the confidence to keep sails up longer, and pull them in tighter, for a much more exciting sailing experience.
Maintenance on a sailboat is not cheap, unlike a motor boat that has an engine, and some electronics, a sail boat has the expense of the rigging, as well as the sails. The sails themselves can cost as much as an engine, and are in fact the engine of the boat much of the time that it is in use. Not including engines, and sails, and rigging, the maintenance cost of a 25ft sailboat is going to run around $5000 per year and you will not know that until the end of the year and ask yourself where did all of my money go?
With Captain Ed's sailing at the end of your day of sailing, you get in your car and drive home, no worry about cleaning the boat afterwards, or the expenses that are involved.
Captain Ed's Sailing gets more popular each year, however there are always great weekends, as well as weekdays available.
