Knowledge Helps You Make The Best Decisions
A person's quality of life is directly impacted by chronic leg fatigue and aching caused by superficial venous reflux and the resulting varicose veins. Many individuals and their physicians incorrectly assess this to be a cosmetic problem or one requiring a painful solution. Left untreated this condition can progress to irreversible skin conditions and unnecessary hospitalizations.
The next few issues of Healthy Strides will present bite size segments covering evaluation and treatment of venous reflux disease so that patients and referring physicians can make appropriate treatment decisions.
This issue discusses compression stockings as a conservative management technique. Future issues will progress through additional conservative techniques such as leg elevation, weight loss, exercise and medication. Later we will discuss the roles of ultrasound, endovenous laser, sclerotherapy and radio frequency albation treatments.
I hope that you will contact me if you would like us to address your concerns in a future issue.
Thanks for reading.

Why Compression Stockings?
During your initial visit a comprehensive venous assessment will be performed by one of our physicians. Together, we will discuss your symptoms and concerns along with your past medical history. Next, we evaluate your leg veins with Doppler ultrasound imaging. This painless test enables us to easily recognize a refluxing vein that has faulty valves that allow your blood to rush back towards your feet when you stand up. Then, we discuss the results and create a treatment plan to address your situation. You will receive printed information about the therapy options and plan. Conservative therapy may be recommended to include a medical grade compression stocking.
Depending on your situation, the first approach before offering varicose vein treatments may be the use of compression stockings, also known as compression hoses or compression socks. They may help relieve some of the symptoms and move blood more efficiently through your legs. Our staff will measure you for a compression stocking or a prescription will be given and you will be referred for a custom fitting. |

The Vein Centers of Connecticut offers
free on-site educational seminars for businesses that foster employee health and wellness programs. These informational sessions present varicose vein conditions and treatments in a low key interactive format. Our goal is to help people understand in-office, state-of-the-art, low intensity, pain free non-surgical techniques that allow most patients to return to a normal lifestyle in just one day.
For example, we recently met with 19 employees of Cytec Industries in Wallingford. We provided lunch for the group along with goodie bags of information for their perusal. Anna Gatewood, P.A., who has been with Vein Centers since 2004, facilitated the discussion. Anna's experience, perspective and communications style enabled her to easily relate to patient concerns, which encouraged questions and interest from the participants.
The Vein Centers of Connecticut will be participating in the 3M Wellness Expo in Meriden on October 5.
Send me an email if you would like to get together for 30-minutes so that I can understand your specific interests and needs. Please visit the For Physicians section of our website, which provides valuable reference information.
