Pain Free Treatments For A Pain Free Lifestyle

Vein disease is often a misunderstood and under diagnosed problem that, when left untreated, can lead to considerable chronic pain and skin disease, and other conditions that affect quality of life.  Venous reflux, the usual cause of varicose veins, reveals itself through chronic fatigue, leg swelling and aching.

Every day people tell us that they have not sought medical attention sooner because "I can live with it" or "it's only a cosmetic problem", among other reasons.

As a medically based practice, our physicians and physician associates are involved in the evaluation and treatment of every patient.  Our comprehensive assessment, including physical exam and ultrasound, provides the necessary information for effective and definitive treatment of varicose veins.

It is the norm for our patients to become symptom free and to enjoy more active lifestyles. Seeing that smiling face and hearing how lives have been improved after a successful treatment is very rewarding to our team!

There is also a cosmetic benefit from our pain free treatments of venous reflux disease, varicose and spider veins.  Vein Centers of Connecticut provides a family of aesthetic services to complement the transformation to looking your best as well as feeling great.

Walk with Confidence!

Research Links Potential Vascular Cause to Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs SyndromeRLS is characterized by unpleasant sensations felt deep within the legs and are described as creeping, crawling, aching or fidgety. RLS can severely affect sleep and significantly impair a person's quality of life. Most patients report that symptoms worsen with time. Some older patients claim to have had symptoms since they were in their 20s, but were not diagnosed until their 50s.

Under-diagnosis of RLS may be attributed to the difficulty patients have in describing their symptoms.  In some cases, the patient has another medical condition which causes RLS.  Any underlying medical conditions, such as anemia, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, kidney disease, thyroid disease, varicose veins, or Parkinson's disease, should be treated. Supplements to correct vitamin or mineral deficiency may be recommended. Some people may also benefit from physical therapy and self-care treatments, such as stretching, taking hot or cold baths, whirlpool baths, applying hot or cold packs to the affected area, limb massage, or vibratory or electrical stimulation of the feet and toes before bedtime. Exercise and relaxation techniques may also be helpful.

The diagnosis of RLS is clinically based and involves possessing each of four internationally established criteria, many of which are routinely found in patients with varicose and spider veins.  Read the full article.

The Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation provides information about RLS since 1992.

New FDA Guidelines for Sunscreen Labeling

Companies can no longer use wording that claims products are sweat proof, waterproof nor use the term "sunblock".  All sunscreens must block both UVA and UVB rays.  Also, no SPF rating higher than 50 will be allowed as there is no compelling proof that a rating over 50 provides more protection than products with a 50 rating.

For Referring Physicians

RelationshipsIn the last of issue of Healthy Strides I introduced you to the pain free procedures provided to varicose vein patients by Vein Centers of Connecticut doctors and medical professionals.  I also emphasized our focus on delivering an excellent patient experience and making it easy for physicians to refer their patients to us.  In this issue, I'd like to tell you about my role at Vein Centers of Connecticut.

I have the pleasure of visiting primary care providers and specialty practices whose patients have varicose veins in central Connecticut and along the shoreline.  I enjoy meeting the staff and learning about their business.  My goal is to build a relationship based on understanding their needs and how they like to work with specialty practices such as Vein Centers of Connecticut.

I introduce them to Vein Centers of Connecticut and provide information about the procedures we provide.  In some situations, referring physicians want to know more about the Endovenous Laser Ablation and Ambulatory Phlebectomy procedures and how they eliminate pain and improve the lifestyle of their patients who are suffering from varicose vein disease.  For these physicians and their staffs we offer a "Lunch and Learn" at their office.  This doctor-to-doctor informational get-together is an opportunity for our MD's to address in depth questions and concerns.

Send me an email if you would like to get together for 30-minutes so that I can understand your specific interests and needs or to schedule a "LunchMary Walby and Learn".   Please visit the For Physicians section of our website, which provides valuable reference information.
