SIG/RTTT Grant Updates

During the Virtual Professional Development in September, teachers began studying research feedback - giving students specific feedback about their work in order to help them master the learning targets (I can statements) of their courses. Giving specific and timely feedback about a student's performance in relationship to the learning targets, can have a high impact on student achievement. We want all students to achieve at VCS. The Building Leadership Team (BLT) met on October 3 to begin preparation for implementing the Teacher-based-Teams (TBT).

Greetings!
|

What a beautiful fall we are having so far!
I had the pleasure of meeting many of you at the fall picnic this year. It's a wonderful experience to meet so many caring parents and see how involved you are in your children's education. If you are looking to get further involved, you might want to consider joining the P.A.C. Our Parent Advisory Council meets four times a year, participates in the fall and spring picnics, offers feedback regarding the Family Involvement Policy and the School-Family Compact, and much more. It's a great way to meet other VCS families and support the school. Contact visiting.teachers@vcslearn.org for more information.

3rd Grade Guarantee
|
At VCS, we are committed to the success of every child in every aspect of education, particularly in the area of literacy. Due to this commitment, we have created a comprehensive Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan for our elementary students.
During the first few weeks of school, every student in kindergarten through eighth grade took the iReady Reading Diagnostic Assessment. Students who are not quite on track to be reading at their grade level, will participate in this improvement plan throughout the year.
Students working in this improvement plan will participate in activities such as the i-Read instructional program and online, small group instructional sessions.
Starting with the 2013-2014 school year, all students entering the third grade must demonstrate a certain level of competency in reading before advancing to the fourth grade. This "Third Grade Guarantee" is a requirement set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. If you have questions regarding the Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans please contact Dr. Teeters or Mrs. Varner.

| Important updates to No Child Left Behind |
This summer, the U.S. Department of Education granted the Ohio Department of Education a waiver of several provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Part of this waiver may relate to your child's education.
Schools were required to notify parents if they were formally identified by the Ohio Department of Education as in need of improvement. This provision has been waived, and because of this, VCS is no longer required to send a letter notifying parents of the school report card. This report card can instead be found online. Note that the 2011-2012 report has not yet been released.
If the school district had been formally identified by the Ohio Department of Education as in need of improvement for two or more years in a row, the district was required to offer students the opportunity to receive Supplemental Educational Services (free tutoring). This provision has also been waived. VCS will no longer contract with external companies to provide in-home tutoring to some students. Instead, online tutoring by VCS teachers will be offered to K-3 students performing below grade level.
You should have or will be receiving a letter explaining this in detail. You can read the letter in its entirety by clicking here.

2012 VCS graduate Logan Orr, takes his Oath of Enlistment for the U.S. Armed Forces. Until recently, online schools were listed as Tier II schools, making it very difficult for students to enlist.
