Greetings!

Jim McCord

Happy Summer! I hope you are taking the time for some fun in the sun and relaxation. We are keeping busy here in the office, especially with summer school. Registration has greatly increased this year, particularly with our own VCS students. It looks like many of you are taking advantage of our lower prices!

We are also working on next school year. We want to make our back to school process much easier. We plan to send many of the forms needed for next school year in an email versus the traditional mail format. For this to work, it is crucial that we have updated email addresses for everyone. If we don't have your email address on file, or have an old address, please send the new one to jill.workman@vcslearn.org.

Good luck class of 2012!

VCS celebrated the class of 2012 in a gradation ceremony on May 19 at the Bridgewater Conference Center in Powell. VCS gradated 131 seniors, with many of them attending the ceremony. Click here for the graduation program for a list of all the graduates. Congratulations and good luck, VCS class of 2012!

K-5 students take a field trip to Three Creeks Park

Last month, VCS students in grades K-5 visited the Three Creeks Metro Park for an end of the year field trip. Students enjoyed a 3-mile tram ride, traveling down Blacklick creek, cutting through prairie meadows and wetlands. Concluding the trip, students experienced the park's "natural play area" and some were even featured on a WBNS 10-TV news segment about the park! Be on the lookout for the segment to be posted in the upcoming weeks.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Michael Barlage
Michael Barlage

Name: Michael Barlage
Grade: 10
From: Amelia

What is your favorite thing about VCS? There are many things I like about VCS. The best part is that I can choose the hours each day that I do school work. I run a MindCraft server and have friends from multiple US time zones, the UK, and Austrailia. I like to be available late at night to hang out with them online and have fun. If I were in traditional school I would have to get up at 6am. At VCS, I can wake up at noon, and work until dinner around 6-7, then have my "afterschool" time with my global friends.

What is your favorite subject? Realmente disfruté mis clases de español con la Señora Linik. I enjoy learning other languages and the Spanish episodios were very engaging. I also like all Science classes. VCS's High School Science has some pretty cool simulations and videos.

What is your plan for after graduation? My plan after graduation is to move to London, England and attend University at Kingston. I have a friend from Australia who is going to chip in on getting a flat near the school. At Kingston I hope to study something in the field of Computers such as Graphic Design, Digital Imaging, Programming or Communication and Networking.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like to hang out online with my friends and play MindCraft and other RPG games online, create video blogs, create digital images for Deviant Art (because I can earn money doing this) and I like playing with my kitties and dogs.

What is your favorite movie? The Matrix

What is your favorite book? I have always been partial to the Harry Potter series, but also I enjoy any books in the Vladimir Tod vampire series, and pretty much anything science fiction. I also enjoy Japanese Animae graphic novels.

What is your favorite food? Steak and California Kitchen Pizza

Do you have any siblings? No, not unless you count my 3 dogs and 5 cats.

What made you choose VCS versus a traditional school? I was bullied at traditional school. It only started happening in High School during my freshman year. My anxiety was high, and I couldn't concentrate much less learn in that environment. So, my parents gave me the option to try VCS and I have been here ever since.

Any advice you would like to share with your fellow students? Yes. Do not put off doing the more difficult course projects because it is not easy to complete them at the end of the semester. Stay as caught up as possible on all of your assignments and ask your teachers for help. If you don't, you will be miserable. If you stay caught up, life is good.
