Race to the Top News

The State Diagnostic Evaluation Team spent two days in the VCS office, providing us with a diagnostic review of our program.

On January 4 and 5, the SIG Building Team met with Bruce Friend, an educational consultant who will be helping the SIG team develop an instructional model.

Greetings!

Jim McCord

Happy new year! It's an exciting time because it's the beginning of a new calendar year and a new semester at VCS. If you've been working hard in your classes and completing your assignments, keep up the good work! If you've slipped behind this year, take this opportunity for a fresh start, and make a commitment to finish strong. You can do it! There are many caring people at VCS who are willing to help you succeed.

Please note that VCS Ohio will observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 16. There will be no school that day. It is a good time to reflect on the important role Dr. King played in social change. He was quite an influential and inspiring leader in our society.

VCS Ohio can help students with dyslexia

Orton Gillingham flier

Did you know that 1 in 3 children are not reading at grade level when they enter the third grade? Reading is crucial to the success of all students--it is the academic skill that lays the foundation for all learning. Statistics show that 74 percent of the children who are poor readers in third grade remain poor readers in the ninth grade. Often they can't read well as adults either. In some cases, reading difficulty can be caused by dyslexia. There is help available, no matter the cause of your child's reading struggles. Please see how VCS Ohio can help your child become a better reader! Free face-to-face help is available. Click here to download an informational flier. In the Dayton area, call Stacey Whittaker at (937) 408-6042. In central Ohio, call Becky Petry at (740) 345-1995.

Students celebrate the holiday season

The VCS visiting teachers have been busy the past few months, traveling around the state for the annual holiday craft making event. They hosted an event in Ravenna, Englewood (near Dayton) and at the VCS office in Columbus. More than 75 students and family members gathered together to celebrate the season with food, fun and crafts! See some photos from the Columbus event below. To view all the photos, click here.
