Race to the Top News

On Monday, Dec. 5 and Tuesday, Dec. 6, representatives from the School Improvement Grant (SIG) Assessment Team visited the VCS office. During that time, the representatives observed classrooms by watching recorded lessons. They also visited live sessions and spoke with teachers in person on Monday since the staff was present for our professional development.

Greetings!

Jim McCord

Oh, how time flies! Tomorrow is the last day of the first semester, and I'm sure you are busy wrapping up before the winter break. Classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Enjoy your time off!

If you are home watching TV over the next few weeks, you might see a VCS commercial. We are promoting VCS on some cable networks around the state in order to enroll more students. The new semester is a time when we usually see an increase in enrollment. If you know anyone who might be interested in full-time enrollment or individual courses, please pass along their contact information to Lori Berkheimer or Jill Workman for follow-up. We always welcome new wolves to the pack!

I hope you have a safe and happy holiday season!

Respectfully,

Jim McCord

Laptop pilot program underway

Some VCS Ohio students will soon receive new laptop

computers through our laptop pilot program. The students chosen for the pilot are being contacted by the tech team to make pick-up and delivery arrangements. Due to an unanticipated change in the program, students will receive laptop computers, not netbooks as previously planned. Families will continue to be reimbursed for internet service since the laptops will not receive a 4G signal. Please direct questions about the laptop distribution to the Help Desk at (866) 501-9473, ext. 5124.

Congratulations, Gabriela!

Gabriela AwardGabriela Linik was recently awarded the "Teacher of the Quarter" at the December professional development. Linik was chosen by the management team for her persistence in promoting and exposing our students to foreign language. She also hosted the first-ever VCS student teacher.

Congratulations, Gabriela. Keep up the great work!

Holiday Help - Thank you!

The VCS elves have been busy shopping and wrapping all the presents for the annual Holiday Help project. This year, we selected four deserving families and raised over $650! Many toys, clothing and food donations were given as well. A giant thank you to everyone who donated, shopped, wrapped and delivered the presents. These families will have a wonderful holiday thanks to all our kind and caring VCS wolves!

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Anna Ernst
Anna teaches High School Language Arts

What is your favorite thing about VCS?
I love the fact that VCS is flexible for our students.  There are so many students who need to go to work or have other obligations that do not fit into a regular "school day".  They can access it anywhere and anytime!

What do you want students to accomplish while they attend VCS? I want my students to realize their own potential and become more responsible as a student.  I also want them to realize that they can accomplish anything as long as they have an education!  Education is freedom

What advice do you want to pass on to students? The best advice I can give a student is to take their studies seriously, soon they will be an adult and they will need their education to get ahead in life.  You will never want to look back and realize you should have paid more attention to your studies.

Favorites:

Food: My mom's lasagna

Book: Gone With the Wind, Twilight Series, The Pillars of the Earth

Movie: Gone With the Wind

TV Show: Boardwalk Empire and Modern Family

Hobby/Interest: Read, read, and read!

Season: Summer

Vacation Destination: Anywhere close to the ocean

Childhood Memory: My best memory of growing up are family dinners almost every night.

Quote: "Forgiveness begins when you are able to give up the hope that you can change the past."

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Matt O'Bryant
Matt is a VCS student adviserMatt O'Bryant

What is your favorite thing about VCS? The flexibility and the people! I've said this is the best job I have ever had. It's because of our students and our staff. It just seems the whole atmosphere for the most part is always positive. Our teachers go out of their way to help our students not because they have to but because they believe and live our mission.

What has been your most rewarding experience at VCS? Meeting our students. In the past 4 years it has been hard because of other job titles I had to actually be able to get out and meet and get to know our students but this year that is my job. It has been wonderful to spend time talking with them and just making connections.
