First day of school

August 24

Greetings!

Rick

I hope you're enjoying your summer so far! I've been busy, but I've managed to squeeze in some leisure time on the golf course too.

I feel very upbeat about the exciting things going on at VCS right now. Read below to learn about our record-high summer school attendance, the SIG grant and the upcoming deadline to enroll in the VCS/Kent State University dual credit program.

We're working hard and preparing for next school year, which will start a bit earlier this year. The first day of school at VCS is August 24. I look forward to partnering with each of you again this school year!

Also, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to our newest partner, Athens-Meigs ESC and superintendent, Rick Edwards.

Sincerely,

Mr. Rick Teeters

Director of Special Programs

Summer school success!

Summer 2011 has been a big year for VCS. We reached our highest summer school enrollment ever, with more than 330 students in 400+ classes! Thank you to all who contributed to our summer school success! We are in the process of sending surveys to summer school participants and collect feedback to improve our summer school program for next year. If you have any feedback of your own, please let us know. You can email any comments or suggestions to jill.workman@vcslearn.org

VCS awarded with SIG grant

VCS was recently awarded with a three-year School Improvement Grant. This grant will go hand-in-hand with Race to the Top and will significantly improve the quality of VCS and our programs.  With this grant, we are going to employ eight new Parent Engagement Specialists that will work regionally around the state. As a regional ESC partner, these Parent Engagement Specialists will be available for you to utilize. We have also hired a SIG administrator as well as Math and Literacy Specialists. If you have any questions about the School Improvement Grant or Race to the Top, please contact Rick Teeters.

What has been your favorite thing about VCS?
VCS is very flexible and that was really helpful. I always knew I would be helped if I needed help, but I had the flexibility to do my work when it was convenient for me.

What was your schooling experience before you attended VCS?
I had been to private school and public school which were ok, but I ended up being homeschooled by my mom. It was really nice because I got to work at my own pace but she started homeschooling my sisters too, so she couldn't help me as well. VCS became a better option because I had more personal help with my school.

So how is VCS different than a traditional school?

You can learn without high school drama in the way. I like my time with my friends but I like it separate from my school because I think that when you are doing too much socializing, it can hold you back from really getting what you can out of school. It's also more one-on-one. I think it's easier to be in contact with your teachers and really get the help that you need with VCS than in a traditional classroom setting.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I am going to go to Ohio State Newark for a year and then I'm going to switch to Ohio State main campus. My plan is to major in linguistics and maybe be an interpreter.

How has VCS prepared you for the real world?

I have a whole year of college in already so I could feasibly graduate in three years which is cheaper and more time efficient, which is really awesome.
