Race to the Top News

VCS Ohio was recently awarded a three-year School Improvement Grant. The SIG grant goes hand-in-hand with Race to the Top as far as goals for improving our school. VCS staff members are working hard this summer to implement the improvement strategies laid out in both RTTT and the SIG grant.

Greetings!

Jim McCord

I hope you enjoyed the Fourth of July holiday! I had a great time with my family celebrating Independence Day, as well as a few birthdays. Speaking of birthdays, VCS is celebrating 10 years this year! You'll hear more about that as we move into the new school year. Mark your calendar for the first day of school on Wednesday, August 24. It's an earlier start than previous years, but you will also get out of school earlier in the spring. Tell your friends about that, and they might want to attend VCS too! We are currently taking applications for full-time enrollment and individual courses. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Fourth graders at the fair

Ohioans will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting new interactive agricultural education program at the Ohio State Fair, hosted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and Ohio's agricultural commodity groups. As an added bonus, exiting fourth grade students and one chaperone can come to the Fair for free on any one day, July 27 - Aug. 6, to take part in this program, upon presentation of the student's valid report card at the entrance gates. Exiting fourth grade students will also be able to enter an essay about their agricultural education experience for the chance to win one of four $500 scholarships. Learn more about this exciting opportunity, as well as a competition open to all Ohio students, and review complete rules at www.agri.ohio.gov.

Yearbooks coming soon

We have been working hard on the yearbooks all summer long and they are almost ready! Thank you to everyone who submitted pictures. Those who ordered books will get them delivered directly to their home. For everyone else, be on the lookout for the online yearbook to be introduced this fall.

In the meantime, here are a few sneak peeks.

Foreign language and your future

It seems reasonable to conclude that English is the only language you need to master, but this complacency breeds catastrophe. English is not replacing other languages; it is merely becoming the most common form of social currency. As English usage proliferates worldwide, it's becoming less of a differentiator or advantage. In fact, it's making bilingual the new prerequisite. Imagine a world in which everyone speaks English. You just graduated with an accounting degree. Congratulations. Prepare to compete with accounting graduates fluent in at least two languages. Given equal technical qualifications, who do you think will get the job?

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Abigail Spear

abby spearName: Abigail Spear

Goes by: Abby

Grade: 12
From: Newark, Ohio

What has been your favorite thing about VCS?
VCS is very flexible and that was really helpful. I always knew I would be helped if I needed help, but I had the flexibility to do my work when it was convenient for me.

What was your schooling experience before you attended VCS?
I had been to private school and public school which were ok, but I ended up being homeschooled by my mom. It was really nice because I got to work at my own pace but she started homeschooling my sisters too, so she couldn't help me as well. VCS became a better option because I had more personal help with my school.

So how is VCS different than a traditional school?

You can learn without high school drama in the way. I like my time with my friends but I like it separate from my school because I think that when you are doing too much socializing, it can hold you back from really getting what you can out of school. It's also more one-on-one. I think it's easier to be in contact with your teachers and really get the help that you need with VCS than in a traditional classroom setting.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I am going to go to Ohio State Newark for a year and then I'm going to switch to Ohio State main campus. My plan is to major in linguistics and maybe be an interpreter.

How has VCS prepared you for the real world?

I have a whole year of college in already so I could feasibly graduate in three years which is cheaper and more time efficient, which is really awesome.

Watch for The VCS Voice to arrive in your e-mail the first Thursday of each month. If you have any content ideas, send them to Lori Berkheimer or Jill Workman.
