Race to the Top News

VCS Ohio was awarded federal Race to the Top (RTTT) grant funding to improve teacher effectiveness and student performance. VCS utilized some of this funding by forming a Student Participation School Leadership Improvement Team.  The mission of this team is to increase student participation and retention. In February, the team piloted a program called uBoost. uBoost is an online performance recognition and rewards platform where points are awarded for positive behaviors and redeemed for relevant rewards.  So far, our students have earned over 1 million points!

Greetings!

Jim McCord

I hope your summer is off to a great start! It's time to relax and rejuvenate. I'm already excited about the upcoming year. We will continue to be innovative and make a difference in the lives of our students. This will be no ordinary year since we will mark our 10th anniversary! We'll celebrate that milestone at our all-staff Opening Day event on August 22. Watch for details in the near future. Have a safe and happy summer!

What has been your favorite thing about VCS?
I've really enjoyed my experience with VCS. The primary reason being because I enjoyed the freedom it allowed me to have. I did a lot of traveling with different things when I was younger, I enjoyed being able to take my homework with me.

What are your plans for after graduation?
I decided that I want to go to Wright State to pursue veterinary medicine. Actually, I decided to go that route through one of the classes they offer at VCS, the REAL program, where you can kind of design your own course. I was job shadowing at my local veterinarian for a semester and then that is what I decided that I wanted to do.

How has VCS prepared you for the real world?

A big part of my preparation came from the REAL program. I was at the vet's office six hours a week. I was there as they were prepping for surgery, and I watched surgery.  I had a very good feel for what it was like to work in that environment. I liked that I could get credits for it as well.  I was doing something that I enjoyed, and that I had a passion for but they also allowed me to use it for school credit. I thought was very valuable experience. Especially with an online high school, you don't have a lot of face-to-face contact and interaction with other environments and people.

What is your favorite thing about VCS? I love that VCS helps so many different types of students be successful!

What do you want students to accomplish while they attend VCS? I want students to find success in school while they are here at VCS. Learning is so important for all of us, and we must all remember to keep learning!

What advice do you want to pass on to students? Stay on schedule!  I know it has been said many times, but it cannot be said enough, stay on schedule!  Attending class meetings(elluminates) and keeping in touch with your teacher are also very important.

Favorites
Food: I love chicken!
Book: When I read a children's book, it is anything written by Dr. Suess. Reading for myself, I love books written by many different authors...I love books written by John Grisham and Janette Oke. Right now, I am reading The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

Movie: I love musicals, I think My Fair Lady is probably my favorite!
TV Show: I don't watch too much television. I like some shows, like Modern Family and Glee.
Hobby/Interest: I love reading and spending time with my family.
Season: Spring is my favorite season, because everything is new again!
Vacation Destination: My family loves to plan mini vacations and take lots of short trips to places like zoos, water parks, and amusement parks. (But no upside-down coasters for me!)
Childhood Memory: My favorite childhood memory is being out in the woods with a sack lunch and a book.  I could hide under some large rock overhangs and my sisters couldn't find me!
Quote:  The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart. -Helen Keller

Anything else interesting that you want people to know?

I use sign language to talk to some of my friends and interpret for the deaf at my church. I love animals and have lots of pets at my house. We have two dogs, two cats, a bearded dragon, and an Indian Ring Neck parrot.
