Race to the Top News

The Race to the Top team met on May 26 and heard presentations from the leaders of three subcommittees; student participation, student achievement and parental involvement. The meeting was an overview of the activities for the current school year as well as an opportunity to plan Race to the Top activities for the 2011/12 school year. VCS continues to embrace the Race to the Top initiative as we strive to become an effective school district.

Greetings!

Rick

Summer is here! It's time to regroup and recharge for next year. I appreciate your cooperation and flexibility during this "building year" for our partnerships. It was a great year, and I know next year will be even better.

I sincerely hope you are able to join me at the VCS Partner Roundtable meeting on Wednesday, June 15 in Columbus. See the article below for more details on this important event.

Also, we are about to kick off our first session of summer school. You can still enroll students if you get them in quickly. First session starts Monday.

I hope to see you Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Mr. Rick Teeters

Director of Special Programs

Student Spotlight: Alyssa Black, class of 2011 Valedictorian

Alyssa BlackMeet Miss Alyssa Black!

What has been your favorite thing about VCS?
I've really enjoyed my experience with VCS. The primary reason being because I enjoyed the freedom it allowed me to have. I did a lot of traveling with different things when I was younger, I enjoyed being able to take my homework with me.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I decided that I want to go to Wright State to pursue veterinary medicine. Actually, I decided to go that route through one of the classes they offer at VCS, the REAL program, where you can kind of design your own course. I was job shadowing at my local veterinarian for a semester and then that is what I decided that I wanted to do.

How has VCS prepared you for the real world?

A big part of my preparation came from the REAL program. I was at the vet's office six hours a week. I was there as they were prepping for surgery, and I watched surgery.  I had a very good feel for what it was like to work in that environment. I liked that I could get credits for it as well.  I was doing something that I enjoyed, and that I had a passion for but they also allowed me to use it for school credit. I thought it was a very valuable experience. Especially with an online high school, you don't have a lot of face-to-face contact and interaction with other environments and people.

What is your favorite thing about VCS? I love that VCS helps so many different types of students be successful!

What do you want students to accomplish while they attend VCS? I want students to find success in school while they are here at VCS.  Learning is so important for all of us, and we must all remember to keep learning!

What advice do you want to pass on to students? Stay on schedule!  I know it has been said many times, but it cannot be said enough, stay on schedule!  Attending class meetings (Elluminates) and keeping in touch with your teacher are also very important.

Childhood Memory: My favorite childhood memory is being out in the woods with a sack lunch and a book.  I could hide under some large rock overhangs and my sisters couldn't find me!
