| Greetings! | |

Happy new year! As a blanket of snow covers the ground, my thoughts drift to sun, warm temperatures and.... summer school. We are finalizing our 2011 schedule soon. Online summer school is ideal for students who work, play sports or travel during the summer. Watch for more details in the near future!
Sincerely,
Mr. Rick Teeters

| Talented and Gifted program offers a chance for R.E.A.L world experience |
VCS strives to serve the needs of each and every student. Recognizing the unique gifts and talents of many of our students, VCS offers the Real Experience=Authentic Learning (R.E.A.L) program for grades 9-12. R.E.A.L students research, create, investigate and design their own individual project.
The flexible schedule offered by VCS Ohio gives students time to gain valuable experience through hands-on projects that prepare them for the future. Students will document their R.E.A.L. experience and end up with a tangible demonstration of their talent which could be used for college applications, resumes, auditions and more!
In addition, R.E.A.L. students will explore a wide variety of careers, investigate collegiate opportunities as well as interact with each other to expand their knowledge, all while earning an elective credit. The talented and gifted students coordinator, Mrs. Sherman will act as mentor to help students get the most out of their experience. To find our more about the R.E.A.L. program, you can contact Mrs. Sherman at 888-541-6389 or meet one of our R.E.A.L. students below!
Be on the look out next month for a feature on the X-Team, our brand new gifted and talented program for students in grades 4-8!

Student Spotlight: Fatimatou Zeinou |
Full Name: Fatimatou Zeinou Goes by: Fahtee
Grade: 9 Place of Birth: Niamey, Niger Currently resides: Columbus, Ohio
Fahtee may seem like your typical high school freshman- balancing school, family and friends. But in her free time, Fahtee raises money for malnourished children in Niger. During a trip back to Niger last summer, she was touched by the people she met and felt compelled to help. Fahtee is enrolled in the R.E.A.L. program, and for her project, she sells Anthony Thomas candy bars to raise money for the "Friends of Niger," an organization that provides children's chewable vitamins to clinics and hospitals throughout Niger. To date, she has raised more than $200!
What do you think of the R.E.A.L. program and your experiences? I'm very glad that I could be a part of R.E.A.L. because if I wasn't, I wouldn't have been able to have this great opportunity! I want to continue to help "Friends of Niger" raise money for children's chewable vitamins during the school year, and hopefully throughout the summer! Also, I hope to go to Niger in 2012 to visit clinics and document my trip.
What is your favorite thing about VCS? My favorite thing about VCS would have to be that I can work at my own pace.
What are your plans for after graduation? After graduation, I hope to go to a college (undecided on which college) to study journalism. Hopefully I will find a job where I can go to Niger and do documentaries.
What do you like to do for fun? Practice driving around Ohio with my dad.
Do you have any siblings? I have two younger siblings (Hamza, 9 and Aisha, 4)
What made you choose VCS versus a traditional school? My family and I chose VCS because at my old high school, it seemed like they didn't really care. They would always tell my parents at the last minute if I was doing bad or something. And with that, it never gave us time to look at options, such as tutoring, one-on-one teachings, etc. Back to the top

| TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Mrs. Gabriela Linik | |
Mrs. Linik teaches high school Spanish
What is your favorite thing about VCS? There are two favorite things about VCS: it is the most challenging teaching job I have ever had, and I get to do it from my home, which adds to the challenge. In addition, I not only get to teach, but also to learn! (Hmm, is that 3?)
What do you want students to accomplish while they attend VCS? I want all students to earn their high school diplomas, but most of all, I want them to become life-long learners. In life, you never stop learning, and learning to learn is fundamental to adapt to any new situation or new environment.
What advice do you want to pass on to students? Ask questions! Always ask questions! Have goals, and plan how to reach your goals. Trust yourself!
