| Greetings! | |

Happy new year! It's hard to believe we're in 2011 already. We're getting close to the end of first semester. The last day is January 21. Second semester begins Monday, January 24. Keep working hard in your classes! If you have questions or need extra help, please talk with your teacher to make sure you stay on track.
How would you like to earn points for things like logging in and completing assignments, then use those points to choose great prizes? We are piloting a new program called UBoost that does just that. For now, it will be tested in grades 3, 5, 7, 8 and 10, but eventually we hope to include the whole school! Watch for more information on this innovative incentive program!
Go Wolves!
Sincerely,
Mr. Jim McCord, Superintendent | | | | | | | | | |

SMART software extended to all students |
VCS has recently incorporated SMART technology into many classes. With this new software, teachers have been able to make their online classrooms more interactive and engaging! If you are a new student or a returning student who received a new VCS computer this school year, the SMART Notebook software should already be installed on your computer. If not, then you will receive an installation CD in the mail very soon.
The CD will come with installation instructions, but if you experience any difficulties with the installation process, please contact the VCS Help Desk or call 866-501-9473, extension 5124.
After installing the SMART Notebook software you will be able to create interactive SMART Notebook files, open .Notebook files from the LMS posted by your teacher, record SMART videos, create interactive presentations and even develop graphical organizers! To learn more about the SMART Notebook software and what it can do, click here. |

| STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Meet Fatimatou Zeinou |
Full Name: Fatimatou Zeinou Goes by: Fahtee
Grade: 9 Place of Birth: Niamey, Niger Currently resides: Columbus, Ohio Fahtee may seem like your typical high school freshman- balancing school, family and friends. But in her free time, Fahtee raises money for malnourished children in Niger. During a trip back to Niger last summer, she was touched by the people she met and felt compelled to help. Fahtee is enrolled in the R.E.A.L. program, and for her project, she sells Anthony Thomas candy bars to raise money for the "Friends of Niger," an organization that provides children's chewable vitamins to clinics and hospitals throughout Niger. To date, she has raised more than $200! What do you think of the R.E.A.L. program and your experiences? I'm very glad that I could be a part of R.E.A.L. because if I wasn't, I wouldn't have been able to have this great opportunity! I want to continue to help "Friends of Niger" raise money for children's chewable vitamins during the school year, and hopefully throughout the summer! Also, I hope to go to Niger in 2012 to visit clinics and document my trip. What is your favorite thing about VCS? My favorite thing about VCS would have to be that I can work at my own pace.
What are your plans for after graduation? After graduation, I hope to go to a college (undecided on which college) to study journalism. Hopefully I will find a job where I can go to Niger and do documentaries.
What do you like to do for fun? Practice driving around Ohio with my dad.
Do you have any siblings? I have two younger siblings (Hamza, 9 and Aisha, 4)
What made you choose VCS versus a traditional school? My family and I chose VCS because at my old high school, it seemed like they didn't really care. They would always tell my parents at the last minute if I was doing bad or something. And with that, it never gave us time to look at options, such as tutoring, one-on-one teachings, etc.
Would you like to share anything with your fellow students? Try your best, and believe in yourself.

| TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Mrs. Gabriela Linik | |
Mrs. Linik teaches high school Spanish
What is your favorite thing about VCS? There are two favorite things about VCS: it is the most challenging teaching job I have ever had, and I get to do it from my home, which adds to the challenge. In addition, I not only get to teach, but also to learn! (Hmm, is that 3?)
What do you want students to accomplish while they attend VCS? I want all students to earn their high school diplomas, but most of all, I want them to become life-long learners. In life, you never stop learning, and learning to learn is fundamental to adapt to any new situation or new environment.
What advice do you want to pass on to students? Ask questions! Always ask questions! Have goals, and plan how to reach your goals. Trust yourself!
Favorites
Color: Any bright color
Food: Cakes and ice cream (but not together)

Season: Summer, summer and more summer
Vacation Destination: Argentina
School subject: Mathematics
Childhood memory: When I ran away from my kindergarten class, thinking my Mom was outside. That was the last day I attended Kindergarten.
