Winter Break

December 20-January 2

No School

Greetings!

Jim McCordWinter break is almost here! The snow is falling, and it's starting to look a lot like Christmas. I will take time over the next two weeks to celebrate with my family and reflect on all the great things that happened in 2010. I'll also look ahead and chart the course for another wonderful year in 2011.

I hope you have a safe and happy holiday season. Thanks for all you've done to make this year a success at VCS!

Go Wolves!

Santa visited the VCS office

SantaThe December Professional Development is always one of the most exciting, and is a great way to end the year.  We were greeted with flying pancakes, learned a lot from the breakout sessions and were even visited by Santa!  Thanks to everyone who donated to the food drive, the Holiday Help project and to Fahtee's R.E.A.L. project.  You are all so generous! Special thanks to all our speakers: Emily Flynn, Jacque Prichard, Molly Coffey, Denny Hammond, Rick Teeters, Eric Williams, Marla Terrell, Cindy Campbell, Cheryl Akers, Heidi Varner and Rochelle Nelson. Your presentations were great!

We'll miss you, Ivan!
IvanIt's sad, but true. Ivan Wilson is leaving VCS to take a new position with the Ohio Department of Education. He'll be working with schools in Southeast Ohio in regard to Race to the Top funds. We'll certainly miss Ivan's professional knowledge and skills, but most of all, we'll miss his warm smile, infectious laugh and kind spirit. Good luck, Ivan! We'll miss you.
Holiday Help
Thanks for your donations to our Holiday Help families this year! We raised almost $700 in cash, plus gift cards and other presents. Special thanks go out to the VCS board members who elected to donate money to our families instead of exchanging gifts with each other. Our elves at the office will wrap everything tomorrow, and it will get delivered next week. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall when the children open their gifts? This is just one more way we have helped make a difference in the life of a student! Go Wolves!
Help Desk to give bi-montly Elluminate sessions

Every other Wednesday from 10 am to 12 pm the VCS Help Desk will put on Elluminate sessions to cover
the common technical problems they get from students and staff members.  Each session will have a small presentation of a certain topic, followed by a question and answer portion.

The first session was this past Wednesday and covered assembling, installing and configuring the printer and scanner devices. The next session is on January 5th and will cover diagnosing internet connection problems.

Please encourage all your students to attend the sessions and send the Help Desk any ideas you have for future sessions!

VCS Advertising
TV ad mother-daughterYou might see VCS on a TV near you! We're doing a short TV advertising campaign to attract new students. We'll be on Time Warner, Insight and WOW cable in various markets around the state. Our spots will be in popular shows like Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant, Jersey Shore, The Rose Bowl Parade and more! We're also doing a campaign on ABC22 and FOX45 in Dayton. That includes regular spots in Good Morning America, Oprah and other highly-rated programs. We're hopeful this advertising will help attract new students in time for second semester!
Student Spotlight: Fatimatou Zeinou
Fahtee

Name: Fatimatou Zeinou

Goes by: Fahtee

Grade: 9

Born: Niger, West Africa

Everyone who attended the December Professional Development had the pleasure of meeting VCS student, Fatimatou Zeinou.  She may seem like your typical high school freshman- balancing school, family and friends.  But in her free time, Fahtee raises money for malnourished children in Niger.  During a trip back to Niger this past summer, she was touched by the people she met and decided that she wanted to help.  For her R.E.A.L. project, Fahtee sells Anthony Thomas candy bars to raise money for the "Friends of Niger" that provide children's chewable vitamins to clinics and hospitals throughout Niger.  VCS helped her raise $84 for this cause making her grand total over $200!  Thanks to everyone for your kind donations. If you would still like to donate to Fahtee's cause, contact Jennifer Sherman.

Thank you, soldier
Many of our nation's military men and women won't be home for the holidays this year. Donna Baker passed along a web site devoted to honoring our veterans. It features "Message To All Who Wear The Uniform" written by a Vietnam veteran. The site also lists ways to say thank you to our veterans and also includes other informative resources. You can check it out by clicking here

Watch for the The Pack Press to arrive in your e-mail the third Thursday of each month. If you have any content ideas, send them to Lori Berkheimer or Jill Workman.
