Welcome to First United Methodist Church
of Michigan City

Greetings!

The following has been taken from The Upper Room Daily Devotional Email from Aug. 27, 2011.

Rules of the Road

1 Peter 3:8-17

Jesus said, "By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

John 13:35 (NRSV)

Today's Devotional

RECENTLY I stopped in traffic behind a large truck. A sign prominently displayed on the truck's rear door asked the public to call a certain number if the truck driver was not obeying the rules of safe driving. Trucking companies displaying such signs surely have confidence in their drivers and in their training.

I began to wonder how my behavior would change if Christians were required to wear a sign identifying us as Christians and requesting that our bad behavior be reported. Would I be less likely to show frustration because of poor service? Would I be more patient while waiting in line at the bank or sitting in the doctor's office? Would I forgive more easily when others made comments that hurt my feelings? Perhaps I would offer to help a person in need more readily if I were wearing a sign that declares my faith.

All of us are challenged to follow God's direction in our day-to-day interactions. Whether or not our behavior is noticed by anyone, we are always accountable to God.

School has started!

We would like to prepare those children who are less fortunate with the supplies they need. Our outreach goal is to collect school supplies to fill backpacks and give children what they need to enhance their learning experience.  Last year we provided to over 40 children in Michigan City.  There is a donation box in the narthex.  All types of school supplies are needed. Due to budget cuts at schools now more than ever parents are being asked to supply many items.

YOU are interested in joining one of our choirs!!  What, you're shy and you're waiting for someone to ask you to be a member of these hard-working, fun-loving groups?  Wait no longer: YOU are invited to join us - come to rehearsal Wednesday evening at 6:00 for Contemporary or 7:00 for Chancel beginning August 31st.  Join with us as we prepare contemporary and sacred choral music for our services.  Be a part of a very energetic church-family group.  Sing great music.  Get yelled at by the director.  Please don't use the following reasons not to join - they've already been used.  "I don't have a very good voice", "I don't read music very well", "I'm so busy",  "I don't have time", "You have so many people - you don't need me", and my favorite, "I don't get to church on Sunday that often".  For answers to your questions and/or further prodding, call Bev Griffith at 312-699-7834.
