Greetings!
I have been drawn to Romans 14 this week. I cannot stop thinking about what Paul was trying to get across to those to whom he was speaking. Paul starts this chapter by saying, "Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters." Paul then identifies some of the weaknesses in people living in those days. Some people felt what you ate was important, while others did not; other people felt that certain "days" were sacred while others felt that each day was no different than the other. I am certain there were many other disputes at the time that didn't get any press. Those who ate "unclean" food, or who considered each day to be no more sacred than another, were considered to be weak in the faith (meaning the Christian faith). But Paul made his point. People "judged" each other on these types of differences. Paul's reaction was clear and concise for in the 13th verse he states "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way." He advised those who were strong in their faith not to cause distress to those whose faith was less strong. Rather, Paul indicated that Christ died for the weak in faith and directs those who are strong in their faith to make adjustments in our behavior for the sake of our brothers. In verse 19 Paul finally hits the nail on the head. "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God...." This direction seems to me to be even more relevant today than it was about 2000 years ago. John VW
