Greetings!
The great BLIZZARD of 2011 is over! I truly pray that each of our members survived the storm.
I started thinking about all the homeless people in Michigan City. I wondered where they found shelter this week. Watching the Chicago news reports about the blizzard made me very happy that we have a nice warm home!
If you've never been to our church on Monday's or Thursday's I recommend you come for a "visit". I just happened to be there on Monday during Soup Kitchen time. I was there to meet with a gentleman from Olan Mills, and afterward I was asked to help Barb with decorating for the Valentine Tea. We needed to go downstairs and it was the first time I was there during the Soup Kitchen! I was just amazed to see CHILDREN eating there. The amount of people that were still coming in at 1 in the afternoon was shocking!
I thought of those people on Tuesday/Wednesday while I was safe and warm inside my house. Where were they? And if the City is CLOSED, how hungry are they today? And what about dinner? Is one meal a day really all those children need? I also wonder how many of those families would not be there if the economy wasn't a little better. I often wonder how many of our own families are just one paycheck away from using the soup kitchen. I really appreciated how kind the volunteers were. I also wondered if there isn't something more we could do for the children who came in. What about their social skills?, pre-school education? We have a Clothesline Ministry, but it looks like some of these kids could use a new coat & maybe a pair of shoes too.
1st UMC already does so much for the community...Soup Kitchen, Open Door, Clothesline are just a few that come to my mind. We have so many talented, loving & giving people in our congregation, maybe one or two of you will figure out a way that we can help the children during our Soup Kitchen. Even just some crayons and paper could help! Could you donate some? Maybe some markers too.
If you are one of the many, many people that work twice a week in our Soup Kitchen Thank You! You are part of the solution and I for one am honored to know you! Keep up the good work.
Tricia K
