... Mary Boyle '12, who was named one of the 10 Teens to Watch in the September/October issue of Fairfield Living magazin e. In her magazine profile, Mary highlighted the value of her Notre Dame education and its role in her faith formation. Here is an excerpt from the story: "...Mary's high school career was testimony to her devout spirit. A student moderator of Notre Dame's campus ministry, Mary spent summers fixing roofs on the dilapidated homes of rural Appalachia and working with special-needs children locally at Camp Fun in the Sun. It was here that Mary was intrigued by the work of the occupational therapists who teach the physically challenged how to make life-changed adaptations."

Grandparent's Mass and Reception
On Monday, September 17, about 20 grandparents joined their grandchildren for mass and a reception at Notre Dame's annual Grandparent's Day event. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Cipriani and refreshments were provided by the Parents Association. The following note was received after the event from Regina Flaherty, grandmother of Charlie Fallon '14: " I had a wonderful time - the Mass was beautiful, the homily so inspiring, and the refreshments delicious. I can't think of a nicer way of starting a day. I feel like a cheerleader for Notre Dame! Thank you all at Notre Dame who made us feel so special."

Blessing of the Biology Lab
On Friday, September 21, Fr. Cipriani and Fr. Bill performed a blessing on Notre Dame's new, state-of-the-art Biology lab. Fr. Cipriani used the prayer of St. Albert the Great, a thirteenth century scientist in the blessing before sprinkling the lab with holy water. Those in attendance at the ceremony included Dr. Margaret Dames, Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Steve Nemergut, a long-time Biology teacher at Notre Dame, Mrs. Mary Ann Nemergut, ND's former Assistant Dean of Students, plus current faculty and staff members and biology students. We have received tremendously positive feedback on the redesigned lab and are trilled that it will provide our students with a top quality facility to conduct their science lessons and research.

About 18 months ago, Chris Waddell visited Notre Dame and spoke to the student body during a very powerful assembly. In 1988, Chris was injured in a skiing accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Chris did not let this injury stop him, as he became the most decorated Paralympic monoskier and recently traveled to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The movie, 1 Revolution, documents Chris' journey up Kilimanjaro and can be downloaded for rental or purchase on iTunes. This film reveals the heart and spirit behind an extraordinary achievement as it documents the first almost entirely unassisted arm powered ascent of 19,340-foot Kilimanjaro. ... it's definitely worthy of a viewing. Click here to download on iTunes. Chris Waddell always thought that the lessons he learned in sports would provide the foundation for later success. As a ski racer at Middlebury College in 1988, he had no idea how profoundly one moment could change and paradoxically enhance that conviction. On December 20th his ski popped off in the middle of a turn. He fell, broke two vertebrae, and damaged the spinal cord. Paralyzed from the waist down he learned and achieved more than he could have imagined, becoming the most decorated male Paralympic monoskier and only one of a handful of individuals to win World Championships in both winter and summer sports. While the eight days on the mountain were grueling physically and mentally, the struggle to reach the summit illustrates Waddell's vision that it's not what happens to you. It's what you do with what happens to you. 1 Revolution hopes to create social change by highlighting our universal struggle to reach our own summit .
