Juniors, Conroy Johnson, Tyler Pohl and Joshua Smith practice forensic reconstruction as they develop a procedure for opening a locked case with selected tools.
|
This week Forensic Science students covered the topic of tool mark analysis (TMA). Like fingerprints, tools also leave a distinct marking behind. A forensic assessment shows how tools can be linked to a crime. Students were given a locked case along with a collection of tools. The students were instructed to open the locked case with the tools given while being recorded by video. After the case was opened, the tools used were placed as evidence. Students, practicing their CSI techniques, were given a collection of tools and the damaged case. By examining the tools used, they attempted to reconstruct what techniques were used to open the case. The video was then viewed to see how closely the reconstruction matched the actual means of entry.

Students Attend Shakespeare's Julius Caesar
On Monday, March 26, the entire sophomore class and the freshman high honors students attended a performance of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar at the Quick Center for the Performing Arts at Fairfield University. The production, staged by the renowned Acting Company of Chicago's Guthrie Theater, set the play in a modern political context while remaining completely faithful to Shakespeare's own language and verbatim dialog. Having read the play and studied its various themes, characterizations and soliloquies, the ND students were a well-versed and responsive audience. The most common remark overheard after the performance has been, "When can we go to another play?" The English Department has concluded that Shakespeare is indeed alive and well at Notre Dame and will be actively searching out future opportunities to bring the Bard to ND--and ND to the Bard!

Service Hours Are Now Past Due
Service hours are now past due. Any student who has not competed the requirement by this time (5 hours for freshmen, 15 hours for upperclassmen) will receive an "F" on their report card for the 3rd quarter. Students must complete their service hours and turn in their verification sheets before final exams begin or they will receive an "F" for the 4th quarter as well. Students who do not complete their service hours do not move on to the next grade level until they fulfill the requirement. This means that seniors who do not have their service hours completed will not graduate until the hours are done and verification is turned in to Mr. St.Onge.
Many students have completed service hours but have not turned in their verification sheets. Students who have completed hours but have not turned in their sheets do not get credit for their service hours until they turn in their sheets. These students will receive an "F" until their paperwork is turned in to Mr. St.Onge.
There are numerous opportunities for service hours currently available through Campus Ministry and other clubs. Those students who have not yet completed their service hours are encouraged to investigate these opportunities. Parents who have questions are asked to please address them to Mr. St.Onge via email: stonge@notredame.org.
