200 Students Make Service Day a Tremendous Success

Gwen Vital '14, Garfield Campbell '12 and Michael Juan '14 help in the classroom.
On Thursday, February 2, two hundred Notre Dame students were given the opportunity to give of themselves through a variety of different types of service in solidarity with each other.  It is a great expression of our motto, Be An Imitator of Christ, when we are able to send such a large group of students out to perform service and a great reminder to the kids that anyone can serve, and that service comes in many different forms.

From left to right, Katie Edwards '13 and Jessica Fogassa '15 read to a class.

Some of the service projects which students participated in, as part of our celebration of Catholic Schools Week, included tutoring and assisting in classrooms at schools such as Our Lady of Grace in Stamford, All Saints School in Norwalk, St. Peter School in Bridgeport, Park City Prep in Bridgeport, Sister Theresa Day Care in Bridgeport, St. Catherine's Academy in Fairfield, St. Ambrose School,  St. Raphael School, and St. Andrews School - all in Bridgeport - CES, St. Theresa School in Trumbull and Assumption School in Fairfield. Students also served as Big Brothers/Big Sisters by bringing third grade students from St. Augustine School in Bridgeport to see a show at the Downtown Cabaret. Other students helped by volunteering at the Ansonia Nature Center, Homes for the Brave, CCA Norwalk, Merton House, Sterling House, Caroline House, Community Soup Kitchen in New Haven and the Carlton Nursing Home.

Special thanks to all the adult chaperones who helped to make the day possible and to Fr. Cipriani and Mr. St. Onge for their tremendous coordination in pulling the day together. Service has become a cornerstone of a Notre Dame education. Congratulations to all the students for helping our mission come alive through service to others.

On the left, Chelsea Lipscomb '12, Spencer Gerwin '12, Megan Pace '12, Kiandra Dixon '12, Ulricka Joseph '12, Sam Sainvil '15 serve lunch for the homeless at the Community Soup Kitchen in New Haven. On the right, Brandon Pavlik '13 and Zach Dobbins '13 help out in a classroom.
