The Homeless Come In All Sizes
Christmas Baby Picture
Ben's first Christmas - waiting for Santa at Cross Roads House. (Suki Brown photo**)

Six month old Ben* started his life here at Cross Roads House.   When his mother arrived at the shelter this past summer she was pregnant.   After he was born, he and his mom returned from the hospital to their room at the shelter. Over the last six months, Ben's mom worked with her case manager to get on the Portsmouth Housing Authority waiting list.  With several supportive services and benefits in place, they were ready to move out when an apartment opened up. The shelter had been Ben's only home up until last week, but thankfully he and his mom are now settled into a home of their own.

Renovation Complete

Family shelterNew bldg bunk bedsNew bldg kitchen

The completion of the renovation of our family shelter building marks the end of our facility reconstruction project. (Hooray!)  Last month our first family moved into this renovated transitional living space that will house between six and eight families.  Our total capacity is now 96 beds between our two buildings.

Have you ever considered volunteering at Cross Roads House?

Dinner for our shelter residents is prepared and served seven nights a week by volunteers and we could use your help! Find out more by attending our next Volunteer Orientation on Wednesday, February 15th from 5:30 - 6:30 pm at our shelter.   The orientation will include a shelter tour, an overview of kitchen operations, volunteer expectations, and a chance to see that evening's volunteers in action!
