A Message from our Chairman
Chairman Schommer

Nicholas Schommer

Chairman

Greetings! This is my first Chairman's letter to Chamber members since following Craig Johnson as the Chamber Chairman of the Board.

I hope it finds all Chamber members doing well in this second, soon to be third month of 2011.  Do you realize we are 2/12ths done with the first year of a new decade? I think it has started out awesome (stealing Greg's word) for the Chamber.
We had over 130 members in attendance at our January luncheon, over 270 in attendance at our fantastic annual banquet, and over 100 at our February luncheon.  I encourage the members to come to our luncheons; they are lot of fun, entertaining and informative, and with some good door prizes, and good food.  All for $10.00. What a deal!

March will be a busy month for the Chamber, especially with the 12 hours of Sebring race. You should have received Greg's emails stating our need for five more workers to run the shuttle service for the track. This is a service that has historically been provided by the Chamber, so, if you can work, contact Greg.  It's fun and helps raise money for the Chamber, and gets you a ticket for the race.

Also, you should have received Greg's email regarding the Chamber's fund-raising event, Ride the Racetrack, to be held March 13th from 11 am to 3:30 pm.  If you have never done this before, you need to.  It is a blast!  You get to take two laps around the track at 80-1-miles an hour, 3 cars at a time, sometimes inches from each other or the track wall. Well worth the money, and as I said, a fund-raiser for the Chamber.  So come on out, bring your significant other, kids, friends, relatives, and acquaintances.  You can ride more than once if you are brave.

The most worrisome aspect for me, serving as this year's Board Chairman, is trying to remember everyone's name.  I guess part of the problem is that I see so many people as part of my profession--attorney.  (Or, old age). So, please indulge me for the next year if I ever seem dumbstruck trying to acknowledge you by name. Please introduce yourself and I will do my best to remember your name thereafter.

The Chamber, through Greg's and his staff's hard efforts, has grown greatly in members this year. However, we need to continue to retain members and grow membership.  So I thank you for staying a member of the Chamber in these still-difficult economic times. I further encourage you to promote membership to your fellow business friends, acquaintances, and contacts.  Hopefully we can keep our Chamber thriving.  A large solid membership is the heart and soul of the organization.

I hope to see you at the next Chamber luncheon, function, fund-raiser or event.

Chamber Luncheon

The January Luncheon was held at the Island View Lakefront Restaurant & Pub; and as always, Megan and her staff did an outstanding job.
The great folks at MidFlorida Credit Union were our sponsor and they presented a program on Junior Achievement of Highlands County.  We also awarded three new students as Students of the Month! Thanks MidFlorida for your continued support!

SFCC Hosts Women's History Month Panel

South Florida Community College is pleased to announce this year's Women's History Month Panel. This event will take place on Tuesday, March 15th at 7 PM in University Center Auditorium.

This event is a community partnership between the Humanities/Social Sciences faculty of South Florida Community College and the American Association of University Women. SFCC tudents and faculty will be attending, and the public is invited to join. There is no admission charge.

For this event, the panel features six successful women in a variety of fields. They are: Sheriff Susan Benton, Mona Sutphen, executive director of the Highlands Art League; Dr. Melanie Bond of the Center for Great Apes; Dr. Hilary Swain of Archbold Biological Station; Betty Ford-Smith, Highlands County educator and nationally-recognized art collector, and Jennifer Mattison, CEO of Mattison Training Group.

Each woman will be asked to speak briefly on her own experiences: how she got to where she is, what challenges she faced along the way, how she overcame them, and what message she might bring to the young women (and men) of today.

Members of the AAUW will be in the lobby before and after the performance. Each will be representing an important woman in history.

Refreshments are being contributed by members of the AAUW, and will be available in the lobby after the panel discussion. For more information, call Charlotte Pressler, Ph.D., at 784-7247.

Public Service Message from the Sheriff

If you offer money orders for sale at your business I have a favor to ask of you. When you have a customer who is purchasing a money order to be sent out of the country, would you please take an extra moment with that client and casually question the purpose of sending the money? The reason I ask this is that, again today, we had another Highlands County victim of the "Grandparent's Scam."

This unsuspecting grandparent received a bogus call indicating that his grandson had been involved in an accident and was in jail in a foreign country. The caller advised that the grandson could be released upon receipt of approximately $2500. Being of the trusting generation and a loving grandparent, the money was sent. When nothing was heard from the grandson during the next couple of days, the grandparent decided to check on the welfare of the young man. Sure enough he was not, nor had he ever been incarcerated. However, his loving grandparent was out the money. In fact the money was picked up within an hour of being sent and the crooks were off to lure some other victim.

Please merchants, without being intrusive, inquire as to the circumstances surrounding the transfer of large amounts of money out of country. So often we see our seniors being victimized due to their compassionate, trusting nature and it's just a shame. Thanks in advance for assisting in this endeavor.

On a final note, can you believe it's already March and the 12 Hours of Sebring Race is upon us? This event brings with it lots of opportunities for fun with family and friends. It also brings approximately 100,000 people into our community for a few days that visit our stores and purchase items from our local vendors. The positive effect on the Highlands County economy has been apparent for generations, and we hope it continues this year as well. So please enjoy the Race, but choose a designated driver before any alcohol is consumed. Remember, the designated driver is the person who consumes NO alcohol. Also please ensure that no one under the age of 21 consumes alcohol - that means beer, wine, wine coolers or hard liquor. Have fun responsibly! Thank you!
