From the Desk of Greg
Greg Harris, President |
Just as we thought, September turned out to be a Great and Busy month at the Chamber!
Just a few of the highlights:
We had a luncheon and three mixers!!
The downtown & Kenilworth Lodge hosted the Tour of Sebring Bicyclists; and we saw the first annual Sebring Thunder Car Show roar into town (Great Job Bud Whitlock, John Griffin and Committee!).
In addition, the Chamber added nine (9) new members in September and added a new tenant to the Welcome Center.
None of this could or would happen without the tremendous support of YOU!
We have the greatest members in the world and thanks for being so generous with your time and finances.
Thanks for making this the Best job ever!
Greg

The room was filled with fresh baked goods and many seasonal decorations and items were available for sale. Members were treated to AMAZING food by Chef Mac. The restaurant was filled with diners and the residents had huge smiles on their faces. And, speaking of the restaurant, it is open daily, to the public.

Celebrate Kitchen & Bath Month with D&N
D&N Cabinetry is located at 2914 Kenilworth Blvd. |
October is National Kitchen and Bath Month. This is the most popular time of the year for customers to remodel, shop, and maintain their kitchen and bathrooms. It is also the time of the year to find the greatest values! Fall is the perfect time to take on that home improvement project. The kids have returned to school, making a remodel less disruptive to the family. Most projects can be completed before the holiday visitors arrive, making the home more inviting for family and friends. In addition, a kitchen or bath remodel will add value and style to your home. D&N Cabinetry has been building a reputation of quality and reliability since 1986. They are a local, family owned and operated business, and are willing to work with you to custom design your new cabinetry using the latest technology in computer design software. They can show you drawings of what your completed project will look like even before you decide to purchase! D&N Cabinetry offers a wide variety of cabinetry products from made to order cabinets like KraftMaid Cabinetry, Armstrong Cabinets, and All Wood Cabinetry. They also have a 12,000 sq. ft. factory where they produce custom cabinets, countertops, and furniture. Their custom cabinets are second to none, and they will be happy to give you a tour of their "State of the Art" production center and show you just why they have been the leader in high quality cabinetry in central Florida for many years. No cabinet job is ever complete until it is installed to the customer's standards. That is why D&N Cabinetry only employs highly skilled in house tradesmen to do their installs. Not a subcontractor getting paid by the piece. D&N Cabinetry stands behind their work; therefore not trusting someone else to finish the job for them! Cabinet refacing is one of the strongest trends in this economy. With a quality cabinet refacing, you can change the color, style and even the function of you existing cabinets without the expense of new cabinets. These improvements can sometimes fit the budget better than a complete remodel project. D&N Cabinetry also offers a full line of countertops including: DuPont Corian, DuPont Zodiaq, Cambria, Silestone, natural granite and variety of laminates. Visit their Showroom to see the latest in laminate countertops. These laminates cost far less, but look so much like real granite; you may not be able to tell the difference. October is the month to save! KraftMaid Cabinetry is offering a factory discount of up to 20% off. Armstrong is offering 10% off Maple and Cherry door styles. All Wood Cabinetry has 15% off. These promotions end October 15th, so don't wait! Whether you are looking just for a little update, or a complete kitchen remodel, D&N Cabinetry, is your one stop provider. Their newly remodeled showroom is located at 2914 Kenilworth Blvd, Sebring. Office hours are 9:00 am 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Weekend and evening appointments are available by request. Please visit www.dncabinetry.com for more information, call (863) 471-1500, or e-mail info@dncabinetry.com to schedule your appointment. |

Please keep in your thoughts & prayers
The family of
Sandy Foster. Foster was the executive director of Nu-Hope of Highlands County. He was described as a "kind man," a "great boss," and a "humanitarian" by those who knew him best. There was a memorial service for Sandy on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Union Congregational Church in Avon Park. |
YMCA Employee Proves he is 'Fast as Wind'

He's been described as "fast as the wind," and "truly, a great employee."
It seems that Tim Topa, one of the YMCA's fitness staff members, is the total [fitness] package. On August 28, he beat out 225 runners and took first place at the Lake Placid Caladium Festival 5k Race with a time of 17 minutes and 9 seconds.
But, that didn't wind him. He turned around on September 25 and won the Inaugural Miracle League 5k in Lake Placid with a time of 17 minutes and 3 seconds.
Topa, who has been running competitively for two years, says he was inspired by the Miracle League experience, an event designed to support the area's local special athletes
"I wanted to do my part to help them out," says Topa.
His boss, Mike Martino, executive director of the Highland's YMCA, says Topa's victories are nothing new.
"I have a stack of newspaper clippings attesting to each of his wins," says Martino, "It's quite a stack. He's almost Olympic. In fact, he's ten minutes off Olympic time."
Evidently, the discipline and commitment that brings Topa the victories are also present in his work ethic.
"He's [Topa] a great employee," Martino gushes. "He is well-deserving. His hard work and dedication shows up both here at the YMCA and in his races."
Topa is about to tackle his 4th marathon, the Chicago Maracthon on October 10th. For those who want to follow his race, it will be covered by radio on 670 The Score; online, by universalsports.com; and by television on the NBC affiliate in Chicago, NBC5. |

Public Service Message from the Sheriff
In recent weeks the Sheriff's Office has received reports and notifications of a wide variety of attempted scams. The most important step in avoiding scams is to recognize them; with that in mind, Sheriff Benton would like to caution Highlands County citizens about these particular scams which have recently been reported. Jury Duty Scam: The caller claims to be a jury DUTY coordinator who informs the victim that a warrant has been issued for his/her arrest due to failure to appear for jury duty. When the victim protests that a summons was never received, the scammer asks for the victim's Social Security Number and date of birth so the situation can be cleared up. Once this information is given, the target has become a victim of identity theft. This particular fraud has been reported in 11 states resulting in alerts posted on both the FBI and the Federal Court System websites. Fake Lottery Scams: In these scams, the victim is notified by mail, email, or, most often, telephone that they have won a large sum of money in a foreign lottery or sweepstakes. The criminal explains that the victim need only send a few hundred dollars to cover "processing fees" or "taxes." If the victim sends money, the criminal will continue inventing reasons why the victim must send more money before the winnings will be delivered. BEWARE: Legitimate sweepstakes and lotteries do not require money to be paid in advance. Nigerian Scams: This scam is similar to fake lottery scams and the victim is generally approached by letter or email. The criminal, who resides in another country, purports to have a need to hide a large sum of money inside the United States and offers to split the money with the victim if the money can be placed in the victim's bank account. BEWARE: There is no legitimate reason for a foreign national to place money in your bank account. These offers are always scams. Injured/Sick Family Member Scam: In this scam the criminal pretends to call on behalf of a sick or injured family member or claims to actually be a sick or injured family member in need of money. In one recent attempt, the criminal pretended to be a grandson and claimed to have been wounded in a car accident. BEWARE: Before sending any money or revealing any information to the caller, ask for a call back number and call other family members to check and confirm the information. Home Repair Scams: In this scam, the criminals offer to make repairs to the victim's home. The criminals may claim to have "noticed" something wrong or may state they just completed a job in the victim's neighborhood and have left over materials. The scams often involve roof repair or driveway sealing but the criminals could use any possible home repair. If any work is actually completed, it will be overpriced and use substandard materials or workmanship; often no work is done at all. BEWARE: Legitimate contractors and handymen do not use high pressure sales tactics and a phone call to the Highlands County Building Department can confirm if a contractor is licensed in Highlands County. Overpayment Scam: This scam preys on victims who have listed items for sale or houses for rent. The criminal sends payment by a legitimate looking check or money order but the payment amount is higher than the cost of the item. The criminal requests the victim send the overpayment amount back. BEWARE: The original check or money order is counterfeit. By the time the victim learns this, they may already have lost both the item they were selling as well as the "overpayment" amount that was sent back to the criminal. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public never to give out personal information over the phone, by email, or to someone that has visited your home unless you initiated the call or the visit. Such information includes, but is not limited to: driver's license number, date of birth, Social Security number, any bank account numbers, credit card and Personal Identification Numbers (PIN). In addition, it is good practice not to allow anyone access into your home unless you have called for the service. Asking for identification of anyone that enters your home is always recommended, and, if in doubt, keep them out. Calling the employer to verify the employee's presence might be warranted. If there is a question about someone who wants to gain entry into your home or to provide a service that you have not requested, call the Sheriff's Office Central Dispatch at 402-7200 and request a local law enforcement officer come to your home and check the credentials of the person(s) involved. Many scams and frauds originate outside the United States, as the criminals involved know operating from another country can make investigation and prosecution extremely difficult. Be especially cautious of suspicious offers originating in another country. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In addition, if there is a sense of urgency to the request, and especially if it is coupled with a requirement of secrecy....it's a scam! As a reminder, the Crime Prevention Unit members offer presentations on personal safety, identity theft protection, frauds and scams and other prevention topics at no charge. To schedule a presentation simply call the Community Service Office, located in Lakeshore Mall, at 385-0024.
