"Play Ball!"
Lucky 13 in Sports
Baseball, football, basketball... iconic players in all sports have worn the number 13 throughout their careers, often turning assumptions about "unlucky 13" upside down.
 | Former White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen
|
In baseball, Ozzie Guillen and Alex Rodriguez have both worn number 13. Guillen managed the Chicago White Sox to their World Series championship in 2005; Rodriguez of the New York Yankees - aka "A-Rod" - is considered one of the best all around baseball players of all time.
MIami Dolphins quarterback #13 Dan Marino holds the NFL record
for second-most-yards-passed.
Basketball players who sported number 13 jerseys: NBA Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Nash, and Chris Mullin (the latter while playing on the medal-winning 1984 and 1992 Olympic basketball teams).
One of Iceland's all-time greatest handball players, Siguršur Sveinsson, wore the number 13 when he played for the national team.
Retired number 13 jerseys include Wilt Chamberlain; Dave Concepcion of baseball's Cincinnati Reds; and NFL Football Hall of Famers Don Maynard, who played for New York and St. Louis, and Dan Marino.
