Greetings!

Welcome to this late summer issue of GENERO$ITY, an American Baptist e-resource for pastors and church leaders who are committed to "nurturing generous disciples to serve as the hands and feet of Christ."

You and I, as Christ-followers, are well aware that impossible tasks often begin with the smallest of steps.  The widow of Zarepeth and her son survived a time of horrible famine and drought by trusting in the word of the Lord, spoken through Elijah, and by giving away absolutely the last resources they possessed (I Kings 17).  All four Gospels record how multitudes of hungry people were fed with only a few fish and loaves of bread, in spite of the disciples' fear that there was "not enough."  What seemed impossible became possible when the small steps of sharing meager resources was joined with God's desire to provide abundantly.

Here's a small step that families might consider taking:  Sunday, September 16th, is "National Money Night Talk," an opportunity for family conversations around issues related to money.  Jean Chatzky, financial editor for NBC's Today and a columnist for the New York Daily News, is a mother of teens and is determined to change the way North Americans think about money.  Resources parents can use for "The Talk" with middle school, high school, and college-age kids are available at www.moneynighttalk.com.  The resources are faith-neutral, and I would encourage each parent to include a question on the topic of giving and sharing of God's gifts as part of the conversation.

Read below to see how a teen is living with her new commitment to share in, "A Fashionista Takes New Steps To Follow Christ," by Rev. Mark Mahsjerian-Smith, currently serving on the staff of the American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware.

From planning a family discussion on National Money Talk Night to making decisions to share more from the resources entrusted to us, all steps are important in our discipleship journey.  What step is God asking you to take right now?

A Fashionista Takes New Steps To Follow Christ

By Mark Mahsjerian-Smith

For the last few weeks, we have started receiving advertisements for back-to-school specials.  Staples and Office Depot are ready to provide students with the equipment they need to be successful students; however, every parent knows back-to-school shopping involves more than simply pencils, pens and paper.  Retailers are already communicating via television ads, newspaper fliers, radio spots and more, what the "cool trends" and "hottest fashions" are for this year's back-to-school student.  My 15 (soon to be 16) year-old daughter is always highly aware of what gear she needs to return to high school and maintain her status as a fashionista.  Usually, I dread the final credit card bill following the normal back-to-school shopping excursion.

This year promises to be different.  At the end of June and the beginning of July, my daughter attended the Creation Festival that took place in Mt. Union, PA.  If you are not familiar with Creation, this is one of the largest Christian gatherings on the east coast, bringing together the nationally renowned Christian recording artists and speakers to a 5-day event.  After listening to musicians and speakers talk about being missional, my daughter decided to sponsor a child through Compassion International.  She called me via her cell phone before signing up for the program.  It would cost $40.00 per month to sponsor a child.  I explained to her she would need to do household chores as well as cut back on her spending to come up with the monthly contribution.  This would be her mission, not her mother's or mine.  She agreed.  My daughter wanted to take Jesus' challenge to care for the "least of these" seriously.  She wanted to give sacrificially to help a little girl in need.  That means she will have to disregard the prevailing message of our consumer-driven culture and do without some of the back-to-school fashion "necessities" to follow Jesus.

Jesus calls each of us to let go of the prevailing messages of our culture and to become generous disciples.  I am proud of my daughter as she begins to take seriously what it means to follow Jesus.  She is not the only person who needs to come to grips with denying oneself and contributing to make a difference in our world and the Kingdom.  As the school year begins, students, as well as parents, will continue to be blitzed by messages telling them what they need in order to return to school: a new backpack; new sneakers; a new wardrobe; the current high tech devices.  During this time of back-to-school specials, there will be plenty of teachable moments to consider how we could use our old gear or even do without to help others in need and thus be generous disciples, faithfully following Jesus.

New Stewardship Resources
Here are two new resources you may find helpful if your church uses an annual stewardship emphasis as one part of its overall plan for educating and nurturing persons to be generous disciples.
Adv in Thanksgiving logoA newly redesigned version of a popular church stewardship resource, Adventure in Thanks/Giving is a simple and easy-to-use program that invites participants to name the hopes and dreams they have for their church's ministry in the coming year and to share them with one another.  It is designed to be directed by three leaders working with the pastor and includes an all-church celebration dinner, the sharing of stories by individuals who have been blessed by giving, worship and communication resources, and much more.  Adventure in Thanks/Giving is available for purchase now from Judson Press as either a file download or as a CD.

PGiving Magazine coverublished annually by the Ecumenical Stewardship Center, Giving: Growing Joyful Stewards in Your Congregation includes informative articles for church leaders as well as a center pull-out stewardship program.  The 2010 theme is "More Than Enough," and the eleven articles in this issue include:
  • "Sharing Abundantly - A Theological View"
  • "Stewardship With Generation Next"
  • "So You're The New Stewardship Chair"

Vince Lombardi
Vince Lombardi
Ron Vallet, author of The Steward Living in Covenant: A New Perspective on Old Testament Stories, helps us consider what is important.  On February 2, 1959, at age 45, Vince Lombardi accepted the position of head coach of the National Football League's Green Bay (Wisconsin) Packers. The previous year the team had lost all but two of its 12 games (a win & a tie), the worst record in Packers' history. Team morale was abysmal. During summer practice, Lombardi's patience ran out.
