Welcome to the inaugural issue of
Generosity, an e-resource for pastors and church leaders on topics related to financial stewardship and faithful discipleship. With each issue, I hope you will find ideas to assist you in providing leadership for your congregation in these crucial areas.
Based on current research, the term
generous disciples may seem like an oxymoron. Studies have consistently shown that North American believers currently give less (based on percentage of income) to God through the ministry of their church and other religious causes than their counterparts did at the height of the Great Depression. Many churches experience this reality in a myriad of ways: shrinking pastoral staffs, some of whom are forced to seek additional employment beyond the church; and fewer funds available for outreach, teaching, and fellowship ministries, to name a few.
On the other hand,
generous disciples is one way to describe those who are engaged in a vibrant and growing relationship with God in Jesus Christ. Created in the image of a loving, giving God, disciples of Jesus are most closely attuned to their nature when they are both loving
and generous.
Is it easy? Absolutely not, especially in our consumer culture. We are very much in need of transformation in all aspects of our lives - including those related to money and possessions - as individuals, families, and as faith communities. But I do think it's possible, and it is that hope to which I cling as together we share in this ministry of
nurturing generous disciples to serve as the hands and feet of Christ. Will you join me on the journey?
