Addiction: It retrains the brain, is tougher on women
DEPRESSION

The word "addiction" comes from a Latin term meaning "enslaved by" or "bound to." Anyone with an addiction understands this; those without have a hard time comprehending it. Blame this enslavement on the brain, its love of pleasure, and how it learns.

Anything pleasing-from a touch or a delicious food to a drug-induced high or a gambling win-causes a release of a chemical called dopamine in part of the brain known as the nucleus accumbens...

BACK TO SCHOOL
back to school

Welcome to Boyett Health Services News

Hello Friends! September has arrived. Kids are headed back to school and routines start anew. It seems that parents can become a bit overwhelmed during this time, as they begin to worry about dropping their children off, after school sitters, homework and more.  But don't fret, here are a few suggestions that may foster a successful school experience:

Communicate often with your child's teachers- Discuss upcoming events, and any issues that may prevent academic success.

Plan out transportation and child care- Whether your child rides the bus or is picked up, after school care can be difficult. If your after school care plans fall through due to an emergency, it is always good to have a list of phone numbers for trustworthy friends, neighbors, and other parents you might be able to call upon for last minute help.

Get a plan and stick to it- Set a specific time frame in which homework and reading must be done. You may go as far as to set up a "work station" stocked with all the proper utensils needed. This creates a consistent routine that both you and your child can rely on. It saves a lot of nagging and frustration.

Create a master calendar to schedule your family's events- As you get sports schedules, school calendars, and other event info, enter it all onto one master calendar to help you stay on top of what's next.

Make your child responsible for age appropriate tasks- We tend to do a little too much for our kids sometimes. Nowadays, children seem to be lost when it comes to real responsibility. Think back to when you were a child. It's likely that you were responsible for more then than your child is now. Making your child accountable for age specific tasks can build character and self esteem. They CAN do it, if we will allow them to.

We hope these tips will help to ease the load a bit this fall. We've also added a few more links to the left that may inspire you in this area. Let us know what you think!:)

Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
childhood obesity

In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared among all age groups.  This rise in obesity rates has affected our youth in alarming fashion. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6 to 11. More than 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic.  And this epidemic puts nearly one third of America's children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke - conditions usually associated with adulthood.  Even greater disparities exist among young Hispanics and children of color.

But there are opportunities every day to change these trends.  And this September, there is an extraordinary opportunity to build awareness and take action - nationally, as well as in your state, city, workplace and home.

Dental Abscess
abscessed tooth
At Boyett Dental Clinic, We are often approached
with questions about abscessed teeth. Does it need an antibiotic? Can it be pulled? Is it possible to fix a tooth after an abscess?
An abscessed tooth is an infection caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease or a cracked tooth. These problems can let bacteria enter the pulp (the soft tissue of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue) and can lead to pulp death. When pus builds up at the root tip in the jaw bone, it forms a pus-pocket called an abscess. If the abscess is not treated, it can lead to a serious infection in the jaw bone, teeth and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms of an abscess include:
  • pain
  • swelling
  • redness in the gums
  • bad taste in the mouth
  • fever

An abscessed tooth can be treated with various treatments, depending on the severity of the infection. Here are some of the treatment methods a dentist may consider:

  • antibiotics, to destroy the bacteria causing the infection
  • drainage of the infection
  • cleaning the space between the tooth and the gum if the cause is from gum disease
  • root canal treatment if the abscess is caused by decay or a cracked tooth
  • removal of the affected tooth, followed with antibiotic treatment

Following good oral hygiene practices and routine dental exams will significantly reduce your risk of developing a tooth abscess. If your teeth experience trauma (become loosened or chipped), schedule to see your dentist as soon as possible.
