June is here friends! The first day of summer will officially be here June 20th!  Many of you have already been busy planning vacations, working your gardens, and hiding indoors from the sun's heated rays, but if you do have to go outside in the midday heat, be sure you're hydrated. Many don't realize that the main source of hydration is simply...WATER.
Choosing what to drink and when is vitally important to staying hydrated, especially in the hot summer months. The most common misconception regarding hydration relates to energy and sports drinks. Unfortunately, these are not usually good options. Click on the link above to learn more about the suggested guidelines for summer hydration.

We'll leave you with this summer quote... "Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.  ~John Lubbock". Take the time to rest, relax and enjoy the beginning of a beautiful summer. Even the good Lord took the time to rest!  :) God bless!

Bug Bites
Insect control and avoid-
ance becomes a focus for most families when the seasons change and warm weather arrives. It is very important
to protect yourself against illnesses, like West Nile
Virus and Lyme Disease.

Lyme disease and West Nile Virus are diseases that may be a threat to you and your family throughout the summer. West Nile virus is passed to humans through infected mosquito bites, while Lyme disease is a serious disease caused by the bite of a deer tick. Approximately 20% of all deer ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease Untreated, the disease can cause a number of health problems, though patients treated with appropriate antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover rapidly and completely.
Fewer than one percent of mosquitoes carry the West Nile virus and fewer than one percent of people infected with the virus will develop severe illness. West Nile virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and/or meningitis (inflammation of the brain's lining). However, most infections are mild and symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and occasionally include skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes. If you experience any of these symptoms after a mosquito bite, visit your health care provider immediately.
For protection against ticks, mosquitoes, and other insects, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control issued a statement in May 2008 recommending equally DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535 (3-[N-Butyl-N-acetyl]-aminopropionic acid, ethyl ester) for skin. Synthetic repellents tend to be more effective and/or longer lasting than "natural" repellents. Regardless of which repellent product used, it is recommended to read the label before use and carefully follow directions.

How Do I Get Cavities?

What is in Your Mouth?
Oral exam

To understand what happens when your teeth decay, it's helpful to know what's in your mouth naturally. Here are a few of the elements:

  • Saliva: Your mouth and teeth are constantly bathed in saliva. Although we never give much thought to our spit, this simple fluid is remarkable for what it does to help protect our oral health. Saliva keeps teeth and other oral tissues moist and lubricated, washes away some of the food particles left behind after we eat, keeps acid levels in the mouth low, and protects against some viruses and bacteria.
  • Plaque: Plaque appears as a soft, gooey substance that sticks to the teeth a bit like jam sticks to a spoon. It is, in fact, colonies of bacteria, protozoa, mycoplasmas, yeasts and viruses clumping together in a gel-like organic material. Also in the mix are bacteria byproducts, white blood cells, food debris and body tissue. Plaque grows when bacteria attach to the tooth and begin multiplying. Plaque starts forming immediately after a tooth is cleaned; it takes about an hour for plaque to build up to measurable levels. As time goes on, different types of microorganisms appear, and the plaque thickens.
  • Calculus: If left alone long enough, plaque begins to mineralize and harden into calculus or tartar because the plaque absorbs calcium, phosphorus and other minerals from saliva. These minerals form crystals and harden the plaque structure. New plaque forms on top of existing calculus, and this new layer can also become calcified.
  • Bacteria: We have many different strains of bacteria in our mouths. Some bacteria are good; they help control destructive bacteria. When it comes to decay, Streptococcus mutans is the bacterial strain that does the most damage. It attaches easily to teeth and produces acid.
