May 2012

The month of May always seems to have me on the edge of my seat... We're just on the cusp of summer, school is about to let out, gardens have been planted and the weather is so gorgeous it has us all yearning to be outside. The sun, it does a body good! And there is science to back it up.

Everyone knows that exposure to the sun causes your body to produce vitamin D, but it is proven that light can actually boost your mood.
It can also help to make you more alert and help you to think more clearly.  A little light can do a lot. It's no wonder that seasonal change affects, not only the landscape and temperatures, but also our attitude!

May is also a wonderful month to celebrate mothers! Mother's Day falls on May 13th this year. Quote: A mother is she who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one else can take (Cardinal Mermillod).  Mothers are often a wellspring of life, resource and ingenuity (but we rarely recognize it until we are much older). They nurture us to health, teach us life lessons and comfort us when times are hard. They carry a long list of responsibilities but rarely complain. Mothers are a gift! Show Mom you appreciate her this year!

Fitness Month!

FITNESSFitness. Most of us esteem it a bad word. Just the word can evoke thoughts of dread and defeat. We all know we need to be fit; we know we need to exercise, but it seems that many of us struggle with following through and actually taking the necessary steps to become fit. We all have our reasons (no time, no motivation, etc), but hopefully we can help to change your perspective.

Motivation

Motivation is such a huge topic, right? Everybody seems to struggle with it at one point or another and we all want to understand how to have more of it.

It seems the reason we lose our motivation to workout in particular is truly connected to something much deeper than surface things like finding new ways to get yourself to the gym.

Truly, whether or not we are feeling motivated to workout is actually tied to how much passion we have for our life. When we feel sad or depressed about life, the last thing we have is motivation to get up and do something physical!

But if we can give ourselves a break for a bit, realizing that it may not be as simple as just getting "motivated," then that might help to relieve some of the pressure that oftentimes makes us feel even worse (since we aren't working out like we think we should be).

It's hard to be honest with ourselves about how happy we are with our lives because it's scary, but being honest and aware is the only way to get happy and motivated for the long-run. Read More...

Sedation Dentistry
Sedation girl

Sedation Dentistry is a facet of the dental world that seems to go unnoticed and is largely underused.  While Sedation Dentistry has grown in popularity over the last several years,  many more  could certainly enjoy the relief that sedation brings. It offers several benefits for both the patient and the dentist. For patients who suffer with dental fears or anxieties, the use of sedation dentistry is actually the only way that they can get the dental care they need and improve their dental health. Dental anxiety and phobia are extremely common. It has been estimated that 9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. That's about 30 million to 40 million people. In a survey by the British Dental Health Foundation, 36% of those who didn't see a dentist regularly said that fear was the main reason.

People often use the words "anxiety" and "phobia" to mean the same thing, but they are different.

Those with dental anxiety will have a sense of uneasiness when it's time for their appointments. They'll have exaggerated or unfounded worries or fears. Dental phobia is a more serious condition. It's an intense fear or dread. People with dental phobia aren't merely anxious. They are terrified or panic stricken.

People with dental phobia have a higher risk of gum disease and early tooth loss. Avoiding the dentist may have emotional costs as well. Discolored or damaged teeth can make people self-conscious and insecure. They may smile less or keep their mouths partly closed when they speak. Some people can become so embarrassed about how their teeth look that their personal and professional lives begin to suffer. There is often a serious loss of self-esteem. Read more...
