GYC turns 50!
Graduating Eexcutive Board
Greetings!

Spring is here! It is time for a new beginning, as for the seniors, the high school years are coming to an end. Most of us are excited about getting out of here, but leaving a family like GYC behind will be very hard. Most certainly, you have been through this phase.

Nonetheless, the year has not ended yet! We still have so much going on in the youth council and we would like to fill you in on all of them. We hope you enjoy this edition and please let us know if there is anything that we can do to improve this youth council. One change is that the GYC Alumni Newsletter is now the responsibility of the Internal Affairs Director. I hope you enjoy these updates on GYC.

Sincerely,
Hilary Chan, IAD

Changes within Greensboro Youth Council
Constantly Working towards a Successful Youth Council
It was not that long ago, when Blair Barnes led the youth council through a spectacular year as GYC Chair. Now she has returned to give us guidance as an advisor as GYC continues to grow and give back to the community. After she graduated from Middle College at Greensboro College, Blair continued her education at UNC-Greensboro.

In the Fall Edition, we mentioned that the office had been renovated. Just in case you missed that issue, you should come by and visit. Otherwise, the office is now green and white with a central black stripe encircling the entire room. It has made the office much more lively and a more pleasant area to work.

Aside from the physical changes, we have made quite a few policy alterations to keep GYC up-to-date. The point system has been changed significantly. We have offered more points for volunteers who make reminder phone calls, write articles for connections, and things that required extra physical motivations.

This year, instead of organizing Spirit Activities, we planned parties during months when we do not have much activity for volunteers to come together. So far, we have had two parties, Black & White and Neon Party, in the Month of September and March respectively. Both of the events turned out to be a success and special thanks go to the Coliseum for providing the space for our parties.

We hope to contiune to grow and change into another successful year. So stay tuned for more updates to come.
GYC Carnival LogoCarnival of 2010
Cherri Miller, Chair
Yes, it is that time of the year already! Our biggest event of the year, Carnival remains the largest youth run event in the state since its estalishment. As for usual, this event requires great deal of planning and our chair, Cherri Miller, has been leading a spectacular project so far. She has been dedicated to her position and has attended Executive Board Meetings regularly to report on her progress.

This year we are grateful to have community sponsors. They are Xpedx, Wendy's, Papa John's, Greensboro Parks and Recreation, Greensboro Youth Council, and Greensboro Coliseum. Without our sponsors, this event could not run as successfully as we would like. Thus, we really reappreciate their support.

Carnival provides a week-long famiily enjoyment for our community. Our volunteers and advisors together began planning for this event months ahead. So far, the plannings have been successful. A few alterations have been implemented to improve this event and to better serve our community. This Year, we will introduce new attractions at our Carnival - the Enterprise and GYC Pony Ride on the weekends. What can lit up the dark night sky of Greensboro better than our Seattle Ferris Wheel?

In addition to new attractions and rides, we have also moved a portion of the outdoor events of Carnival into the Coliseum Pavillion. This change comes as the new Natatorium plan at the Coliseum progress.

Of course, the chair isn't the only one working hard for the preparation of this project. She has a spectacular team of major & minor staffs. Sam and Victor Ngo are the business co-chairs and yes, they are brothers! They will be having a Carnival Business Meeting to train their staffs and ensure proper operation during the hectic hours of Carnival. The Booth chair, Mary Lin, will have a training for her staffs to inform them of the regulations and rules of the booths. We want to make sure that everyone enjoys a fun AND safe time, including the children. Volunteers, volunteers, and more volunteers; they are afterall what make Carnival happen. Lily Chan and LaQueta Bartley, VIC co-chair, oversee the organization and assignment of volunteers. The minor staffs are also important parts of this project. Without the chair, staffs, and volunteers, this project would not operate smoothly.

When was the last time you have visited a Carnival? Don't remember? Last year? Well, whatever your answer may be, we would like to invite you to our Carnival. Especially since we are looking for alumni for GYC's 50th Anniversary, this would be a great way to reconnect with us. To show our appreciation for your continous support, we have attached an admission ticket below! We hope to see you there!
Camille's Magic Closet
Jasmine Williams, Chair
Camille's Magic Closet is a recently established program that helps high school girls get prom dresses for prom. The dress donations are provided by the members of our community, such as boutiques, thrift stores, and teenage girls who are willing to help other girls. We keep them until the giveaway day, which was April 10th this year.

Aside from the donors, Camille's Closet had other community supporters. We received a grant from the Teen Grant Making Council to fund the project, and we also received a lot of donated dresses. In addition, we were able to buy new shoes and accessories to go along with the dresses. Each girl was allowed to get a dress and a few accessories. Not only were we able to help high school girls, we also helped a girl get a dress for her eighth grade formal. Camille's Closet was a huge success and we would like to thank all of our supporters.

Next year we are implementing a few changes to Camille's Closet. Instead of having a GYC councilman chairing Camille's Magic Closet, we would like to allow Youth Leadership Greensboro 2 graduates an opportunity to run the program. This project will allow the YLG 2 graduates to plan and run an actual project for the community, which will be an advancement in application of YLG 2 objectives.  This will also allow for both GYC and YLG 2 to work together towards the benefit of our community.

YLG 2
A new program
YLG2 Logo

At the request of graduating YLG members, GYC and the YLG board created YLG2. Youth Leadership Greensboro 2 is an extension of the YLG program that allow for high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to continue to improve their leadership skills by participating in a variety of activities that give them an in-depth look at community issues and concerns. Through this program, they are encouraged to incorporate the skills gained from the Youth Leadership Greensboro program. This is also an opportunity for the teens to gain more insight into current events, gain more hands-on training and serve their communities at a higher level. YLG 2 allows more opportunities for the members of the Greensboro Youth Council and YLG students to collaborate, which is a goal that we have always strived to achieve. These teens are encouraged to attend GYC trainings and volunteer at GYC projects. In 2009, we launched our YLG 2 program and had a very successful year. We had 15 participants that completed the program and we are now gearing up for another year.

EB "soon-to-be" Alumni
Post High School Plans
College applications are turned in, scholarship applications are mostly done, but the stress is nowhere near the end! Acceptance letters are arriving in their mail boxes. The next step is choosing the right school, whic is a critical but stressful stage that most of you, as alumni, have been through once upon a time. As the year is wrapping up, we are striving to reply to our acceptatnce letter at our desired school. We have to decide somehow, so it might as well be before the deadline.

As an inspirational leader of the pack, our chair has already progress a step further toward his dream. Kristopher Rawls has been accepted into UNC-Chapel Hill and NCSU, both of these colleges are great paths, but it seems that NCSU's engineering program has caught Kris's attention. Following the chair, our Internal Affairs Director, Hilary Chan, has also been accepted by the same schools. Unlike Kris, she remains indecisive about her college career path. Joining the two, we also have Richard Sosa, who decided to join the wolfpack and study Chemistry. Richard also has a passion for music and he is known for his talent of creating original and fresh beats. Starting originally with just a small group, the members have attracted well-known local producers, who sponsored a concert - a chance to show off their passion.

Marques Dotts (Public Relations) will be attending Morehouse College majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business. Joscelyne Mason will be attending Hampton University and majoring in nursing. Mason wants to be a physician assistant after she graduates. Devin Jones (Training Director) will be attending A&T University and majoring in computer engineering.

As we settled down wth a decision, memories from this past year began to flood our minds. There were good times, as well as not-so-good ones. Nonetheless, they are valuable lessons that will continue to enrich our life as we move on to further our education in college. GYC is the breeding ground for future generation leaders and obvioulsy, you are one of them. Wherever you are today and wherever we will be in the future, we will never forget the time that we spent with the GYC family. We are leaving this organization to the upcoming team of Executive Board, but we are taking with us the irreplaceable memories and priceless lessons.
