March 15, 2012 - Sandwich, MA - Randy Hunt, 5th Barnstable District state representative, spoke to a packed room at the Dan'l Webster Inn about his first term on Beacon Hill and reasons to send him back for a second term in November.
Hunt explained how, as a minority party member, he is not subject to the pressures of ladder climbing. "I don't have to worry about posturing for a committee chairmanship," Hunt observed. "And, by maintaining my CPA practice, I'm in a position where I am not forced to depend on my job as a legislator. It affords me an additional measure of independence in my role as state representative and, besides, it's a great way to stay in touch with hundreds of constituents throughout the year."
Hunt then pulled a "push piece" from his 2010 campaign, describing it as something that most politicians shred immediately after winning an election. Reading the bullet points from his previous campaign's literature, he recounted his follow through on each of his promises, such as hosting a "jobs tour" stop in Sandwich, from which input from business owners and chamber of commerce representatives resulted in a wide sweeping set of bills designed to improve the prospects of attracting new businesses to Massachusetts and to promote the growth and expansion of the state's current businesses.
Jeff Perry, Barnstable County special sheriff and former state representative, spoke of Hunt's 100% voting record and his perfect attendance at his committee hearings. "Randy has found the key to being effective in the State House. He shows up," Perry quipped, resulting in chuckles from the crowd. "Well it is Beacon Hill, you know."
Perry also pointed to Hunt's advocacy for Cape Cod residents who were left without electricity for days in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. "Randy Hunt was the only state representative to testify at the Department of Public Utilities hearing in Barnstable. He came prepared with his recommendations for improving customer communications, which have since been incorporated into legislation setting higher standards for regulated monopoly utilities."
Hunt was also joined by fellow legislator, Vinny deMacedo from Plymouth, who cited Hunt's success as a freshman legislator partly because of his credentials as a certified public accountant. "Minority leader, Brad Jones, appointed Randy to a conference committee that has the task of reconciling the Senate and House versions of a bill to reform the state government's administration and finance. Randy brings his expertise as a business person and CPA to this important committee that has the potential to completely change the paradigm in which state government works and save billions of dollars," deMacedo explained.
