Trail Guides for May 2010

Last time we talked about the most basic security steps every business should take to protect themselves. This month, check out the Highly Recommended Security Steps below.

Pricing on the Dell OptiPlex 380 Minitower remains good. See the system below for more details. For those of you looking to refresh your desktops and move up to Windows 7, this is a good way to go.

Lately, we're been dealing with a lot of malware infections. See our malware symptoms list below and let us know if you need some help cleaning up your PC.

Lastly, Microsoft Office 2010 is scheduled to be released later this year. In our next issue, we'll talk about the benefits of upgrading and Microsoft's volume licensing programs.

Until next time,

Highly Recommended Security Steps for Small Business
  1. For business or personal email, do not open email attachments unless you are expecting it and you trust the sender. This is one of the most common ways to distribute spyware or malicious code.
  2. Do not click on links in email messages, unless you know what the link connects to and you trust the person who sent the email.
  3. While surfing the web, do not respond to popup windows requesting that you click "here" for anything. Close the window by selecting the X in the upper right corner of the window. Do not respond to popups telling you that you need a new driver or special program, or software update.
  4. Online business or banking should only be done using a secure browser connection. Look for the padlock in the lower right corner of your browser.
  5. When hiring employees, conduct a comprehensive background check before making an offer.
  6. Do not download software from any unknown web page. Be very careful if you decide to use freeware or shareware from a source on the web. Make sure you are using trusted sites for software updates for your operating system or business applications.
  7. When disposing of old business computers, remove the hard disks and destroy them.
  8. Train your employees to be helpful, but vigilant when someone calls for help and asks for information. Make sure they authenticate the caller before providing any sensitive information.

Common symptoms of a malware infection
  • Your web browser's start-up home page has changed
  • Your firewall and antivirus programs are frequently turned off automatically.
  • You can't seem to stop excessive popup windows that appear from nowhere.
  • Your computer slows down significantly whether online or offline.
  • You find new programs that you don't remember installing.
  • Programs just aren't working as they should.
  • You are redirected to a strange site instead of a 404 error page, when a web page isn't found.
  • You get alerts from your firewall about an unknown program or process trying to access the internet.
  • Strange and unexpected toolbars appear in your web browser.
  • When you try to run spyware removal programs, they just pop up on your screen and then disappear.
