What is Nosework?  Seminar Coming in August

Nosework Training Video with Andrew Ramsey

Andrew's lessons, seminars and classes use the same foundation training methods that are used to train Military and Law Enforcement Detection K-9's but are designed for pet dogs and handlers who want to explore the activity of Nosework for fun or competition in any of the organizations that offer it.  While they are not specifically designed as a foundation for any type of professional detection work, Andrew uses the same methods so you and your dog can maximize your potential as a team.  The goal of his Nosework Seminar is to engage the dog in the game of searching for a target odor and to teach the handler how to motivate, handle, read and reward the dog building a strong working partnership between the two of them.

Nosework can build confidence in a shy dog, give an active dog an appropriate and challenging outlet for its energy and help the reactive dog overcome its environmental sensitivity.  Nosework strengthens the bond between dog and handler and best of all it is FUN!

Facebook Contest  for Best Training Solution

The contest brought in many good training solutions from Dog Squad Clients, professional trainers and pet owners. The final winner of the Quarterly $100 Gift Certificate Drawing was Jill Fujiwara. You can see the actual drawing by clicking on this  Video Link.

I am going to share some of the answers that were submitted over the first quarter.

Dog Training Solution Week 7: How do you stop a puppy from biting or chewing on you?
  • Damacia Johnson Tabasco sauce and a firm no.
  • Taria Sarkisian When they garb you you "Yelp" they will instantly let go. Be diligent , this is something that's built in to them as puppy's to not harm each other. You have a responsibility to and that is to not encourage it. If your playing with your puppy and they have a soft mouth and you don't mind that's up to you but you can teach them people are ok chew toys, so it's best to not let them chew or bite on you at all.
  • Paula McCauley You lay the puppy down on it's side and hold the head down gently, but firmly and say, No bite. Keep doing it every time. That's how we trained our dog. She is very gentle now when we are playing.
  • Jonathan Brinkley Increase the drive into toys by redirecting and showing the dog there are more rewards in the tug or toy compared to chewing on your arm, and thus build drives that will later be helpful in your training, engagement and motivation. When they don't redirect, simply withdraw attention or create a behavior interrupter.
Dog Training Solution Week 8: How do you keep a dog from jumping up on furniture?
  • Kelvin Limbrick Maintain consistency, set up a family plan to either invite the dog up by asking them to sit and then bringing them up or body black with a firm "no-word." When no one is present use upside down mouse traps to scare him or her should they decide to hop up! Indirect supervision is best to make the dog think that someone is always watching!
  • All 4 Paws Training Solutions teach the dog a reliable stay, take the dog over to the sofa and entice him or her up. If the dog decides to jump up on the sofa give him a correction and then give him a chance to do the right thing. When the dog decides to stay off the sofa reward the dog. To proof the dog against jumping up, once the dog is not going up, add more enticing objects on the sofa correcting him each time he makes the wrong decision, until he reliably stays on the sofa.
  • Problem Solved Dog Training I would teach the dog a rock solid stay command and then put increasingly enticing stimuli on the furniture while the dog is leashed.I would lead the dog to the furniture and give them the opportunity to make the correct decision. If she doesn't take the bait, I would reward the hell out of the dog for not jumping up and correct her if she did. I would have a ratio of at least 5 to 10 reward opportunities for every correction. I would increase the temptation to get up on the furniture with yumminess like Snausages or my mother's Italian Sausage. Depending on the dog's anxiety levels, I may choose to manage the dog's environment at first to eliminate the opportunity to get up on the furniture or until I felt that the dog was trustworthy enough.... OR get a cat that loves the couch more than the dog. or get an even bigger dog that does. Better yet, get my father to come over and watch the football game on the couch.
I want to thank everyone who entered the contest and submitted answers. Stay tuned for the next version of "Dog Training Solutions". Go to my Facebook page for details. Click the icon below.
