Training Question - Dog Pulling Owner Up Stairs
By Patrick Gibbons
"After couple of days of training I have thought of couple of questions: every day Maya and I go up and down a case of stairs and she loves the stairs since to her it means it is either going out for a walk or back home:-) she always speeds up on the stairs, and pulls very strongly. Now, when we are on a regular street, once she starts pulling I normally just change direction, it is a very narrow set of stairs and I am wondering how to deal with it? Do you have any suggestions?" Katja and Maya
Hi Katja,
With the stairs I would recommend backing up (safely of course) if she is pulling you up or down them. The turns may be too difficult in such a small space so if she is incorrect as you go down, walk in reverse back up the stairs, hopefully you aren't too far down when this happens, and make her do it again until she is correct. This can be a very time consuming process so don't get discouraged. Click here for full answer

Hopalong Rescue
Hopalong Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable animals throughout Northern California. Since 1993, they have saved over 17,000 animals, placing them in loving, permanent homes. In 2009, over 1,200 dogs and cats from shelters throughout California were rescued and adopted out.
In March of 1993, the Montclarion newspaper in Oakland ran a feature article on an 8-year old cat who had been hit by a car. Though he survived, his front paw never healed properly and his rescuer named him Hopalong. The photo caught the eye of Helen Hill, a dedicated volunteer at the Oakland Animal Shelter. She gave this spunky black and white kitty with its three good legs a second chance and adopted him into her home.
Helen gradually built a strong group of volunteers and in 1996 Hopalong Animal Rescue became a non-profit organization. In 2006, Hopalong Animal Rescue merged with Marin based Second Chance Rescue, an organization that formed the same year as Hopalong. The two groups had worked together for many years. Hopalong Animal Rescue has grown from a one woman effort to a paid staff of four and is supported by hundreds of loyal volunteers.
Today together with the support of the community and donors Hopalong continues the legacy of Helen Hill.
