RE:Delegation: Keep Clear of the Critical Path
When is delegating worth it?
"I'd rather just do it myself, rather than train someone"
Is there a reliable 'break-even' point?
Not really, but since you asked....
The rule of thumb that I've used on occasion, and really this is a complex subject, but if a task takes less than 40 hours, it's easier to load up existing resources than bring someone else on. |

Greetings!
I can't believe it's already February. Where did January go? 2012 has started just as busy for me as 2011 ended, which is always a good thing in the consulting business. One of the projects that I am overseeing this year is with an aerospace firm. The project isn't information technology focused, but engineering and manufacturing focussed, so it's been a very steep learning curve for me; but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. For years, I've always had the luxury of bringing either forest industry knowledge or technology experience to a project (or both as the case may be). However, this is a project where I only bring my Project Management skills and techniques. I now appreciate what all those business folks felt like when I rattled off three or four obscure IT acronyms in one sentence! I hope your 2012 has started well and full of new experiences! Sincerely,
Robert Schulz AJAE Consulting Ltd. 604-855-5255

Expectations: A Project's Rudder
"As Expectations are laid down, so goes the project".
Expectations lay the ground work for accountability. And productive and successful teams are built on accountability. It is the Project Manager's duty to communicate expectations to team members, project sponsors, and suppliers. This is probably one area of team-based dynamics where the influence of an individual has the most impact.Expectations can relate to quality of deliverables, progress reporting, language in meetings, expected duties, responsibilities, and authorities. In my experience, expressing expectations are generally well received. Most people simply want to do a good job and want to understand what is expected to do a 'good job'.Expressing expectations occurs throughout the project, but most important is to communicate expectations early on in the project to ensure the project starts off on the right course.

"They haunt dent one" Larry
This was an e-mail response I received from Larry when I asked him for some information from a supplier. I think he forgot his glasses and had a hard time using his I-phone!
It's a unique one for sure!
