RE:The Project Charter

What's the difference between a Charter and a Project Plan?  Can one simply use one document for both?

On smaller projects, I have used the Project Charter as the project plan, simply because the document can be smaller.

On larger projects, with longer schedules, more risks by phase, possibly more complicated communication plans, etc, I've used the Charter as a simplified version of the plan, targeted specifically at the project sponsors/executive

Greetings!

No sooner did fall arrive and it is now the first snows are behind us.  I can still recall the summer as short as it was weather wise.  Projects are in full swing along with school and sport activities, and our backs against the seat full throttle as we strive once again to meet those year-end deadlines.  As I write this on the US Thanksgiving, I realize that yikes, before you know it, it will be Christmas!  Where does the time go?

I would like to wish you and yours the very best for the coming Christmas season and a safe and happy 2012!
Sincerely,
Robert Schulz

Delegation: Keep Clear of the Critical Path

Often, Project Managers can be called upon to complete a deliverable or several deliverables.  They may have expertise in a particular area of the project or project resources may be thin and the PM needs to step in.

Before taking that step, be sure that the task you've volunteered yourself for is clear of the critical path on the project.  PM's working on critical path tasks are not good recipes for project success.

Delegation is your friend.  A good PM will do his or her best to delegate those critical path tasks to others.

Have you ever found yourself caught in the critical path?  What have you done to get out or avoid this altogether?

Project Team Notable Quotes

"Well if the trainer is anything like the software, we've got a lot of work to do to get buy-in into this project"      Mark

Trainers are ambassadors for the implementation team.   They hold the attention of many-a-first time user of a new software.  Trainers should be engaging, and know their stuff, not only about the software, but also to some degree, the business challenges facing the organization who has selected this new software.  A dull and uninteresting trainer going through the motions won't help your implementation success rate in the long term.
