RE: A New Release: What do we need to test again?A question was asked: When would you use Formal or Informal Use Cases? I have used Formal Use Cases (defined prerequisites, actors, common path, alternate paths, outputs, system changes, etc) for custom, transactional software systems. For most of my work, I use Informal Use Cases (simple step, by step to produce a result with defined inputs and outputs) for commercial package implementations. |

Greetings!
It's snowing.....again. Middle of April and we're getting another dump of the white stuff. The yard work planned for this weekend will have to wait.....again. Sometimes the unexpected happens on a project to set things back. A software release is delayed due to a stubborn bug that holds it up as well as the rest of the team. The travel plans for your team to meet off site for a workshop get scrapped because of bad weather. Let's face it, sometimes life throws us curve balls and there's no way to predict them. Only option is to adapt, I mean really, at the end of the day, it is what it is and we must adapt. Snowing?..... put on a pot of fresh coffee and grab that book you've been dying to finish. "Sorry Sweetie, no can do on the honey-do-list today!" Sincerely,
Robert Schulz AJAE Consulting Ltd. 604-855-5255

COTS : It's Not Just a Comparison of Features
I have been helping companies select and implement

software systems for over 12 years now; much of that in the forest industry where niche products have enjoyed good prosperity.
However, as the forest industry goes through transition of consolidation and workforce retirements, turnovers, etc, so do software vendors of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) systems. Vendors that have been in business for many years may no longer have the depth of experience that their software version number might suggest.
Selecting good software also means selecting a good implementation team.
Selecting a vendor that not only provides the best features that meet your requirements but also provides a strong implementation team with a good track record is very important. Take the time to interview the proposed implementation team. Talk to their customers who worked with the team on their implementation. Finally, don't neglect the same due diligence on your internal team. Take the time to select the right resources and ensure they are well supported.
Remember, successful IT projects rely on people, more than technology.
Did I miss something? What are some things that you look for in selecting an implementation team?

It's hard to put some context in this one, that's for sure! I'm stumped!
