RE: Lessons Learned: It's about Change

Lessons learned are team lessons.  Each team operates slightly differently and each project brings a new set of lessons learned.

There are no perfect projects.  But that's part of what makes IT work challenging and rewarding.

Greetings!

I am writing this on November 25, the US Thanksgiving holithankfulday.

It's my one day of the year that I get to
sit down with my years worth of receipts and tabulate them all.  It's one job I dislike doing because it's quite monotonous and it takes several hours to do it properly.

However, it's also a good time to reflect and be thankful for another solid year of working with good people on challenging and rewarding projects.  Thanks very much everyone.

Sincerely,
Robert Schulz

Unexpected Challenges: Lessons from the Vault
plunger
One of the unexpected challenges I ran into in a previous project was having my TN Visa for working in the US, audited and then canceled when I was crossing the border, right when I was due to attend some important meetings over the next 2 days.

There was too much wording in the employment contract attachment that referred to project management in addition to business analysis.  Computer Systems Analyst is a qualifying profession but doing work as a project manager is not.  So, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) decided that there was too much management and not enough analyst in my job description.

I was finger printed and sent on my way home.  But before I left, I made sure I knew exactly what they needed to approve my re-application.  University transcripts, letters of reference, etc were assembled over the next couple of days and back I went.  After much more interrogation, resistance, question after question, I got my TN approved.  Whew!

I knew I was home free when all of a sudden after hours of questions, waiting, more questions, wating, the CBP officer comes up to me and asks for my $50 fee and without hardly two more words spoken, I was on my way south.

A good lesson learned for me is that when dealing with regulatory agencies, it's imperative that the documentation be tight, perfect, so there is less reason for them to think and ask questions.

Did I miss something? What are some of your unexpected challenges?

Project Team Notable Quotes

" If we tell them it's a pilot project only, we should get away with it".
Don

Sometimes it is difficult to test new business processes and technology when certain individuals and departments will be impacted, especially in highly organized or unionized work forces.

Truth be told, it is better to be prepared and forthcoming as much time in advance as possible and communicate facts, not proposals and be prepared to follow 'due process' to implement the change needed.  Trying to 'get away with it', never works.

This diligent and deliberate communication and process may take considerable time; it always takes effort.  But it's worth it because the project stands a much better chance at being successful.
