RE: Training: Timing is Everything

What about follow-up training?  When should that be scheduled?

Complex integrated systems that have infrequent users are recipes for follow-up training.  Be sure to include follow-up training in your plans and budgets.  Follow-up sessions may occur a month to 3 months post go-live.

The follow-up training may be a verbatim re-run of the training program, but preferably a scaled-back version or perhaps a tutorial session or "work day" where participants focus on doing their job in the new system with several others in a training classroom setting, faciliated by a trainer or power user.  Participants can learn from each other, especially how different departments may use the system.

Greetings!

Projects as we know are unique and this trait brings with it challenges that we do not expect.  What are some of your most unexpected challenges in projects you have worked on?  How did you overcome them?  These aren't Risks or other things in textbooks, but the unusual.

Feel free to share them (I'll keep them anonymous if you like!)

Should be fun...

Sincerely,
Robert Schulz

Lessons Learned: It's about change

Projects by nature are unique.  As many as I have worked on over the years, each has left me with a lessons learned list that I attempt to apply to the next project. However, each project in its own unique way, provides a new set of challenges and lessons to be learned for the future.

If your project has multiple phases, I encourage you to host a post-phase briefing with your team to discuss lessons learned and ways to improve the subsequent phases.  Don't be surprised by what you hear, each team member has a unique perspective which is  a valuable contribution to future phase success.

Document the lessons learned and remind team members when old habits re-surface that the same result is inevitable unless we learn to change our ways.

To Quote Albert Einstein: "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

Did I miss something? How have you used Lessons Learned on your projects?

Send feedback to robert@ajae.ca, I'll print it in the next newsletter!

Project Team Notable Quotes

" I'm trying to understand processes that are hideously complex." Gary

Understanding complex business processes is key to designing technology solutions to support these processes.

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words.  Diagrams, flow charts, etc are invaluable when trying to unpack these 'complex processes'.  Sometimes, you may find that these 'hideously complex' processes may be simplified when looked at as part of the larger 'picture'.
