RE: Training 'How' not 'What'

OK, so you've prepared comprehensive training manuals and the training is complete.  How do you keep them up to date?

Out-dated training manuals quickly lose their value. Business needs change, software upgrades happen; training manuals need to be updated.

Designate someone on the business side to keep these manuals current.  A quarterly update should be more than enough frequency to keep documents valuable

Greetings!

This is the 10th issue of Sharing Knowledge.  I hope you have found these newsletters helpful.  I enjoy preparing them.  There is so much that we have learned while working on projects together, each project being unique and having its own set of interesting challenges and rewards.

Pass on the newsletter to your colleagues and contacts!  The more we can learn from each other, the more we can expect good results from our IT projects.

Sincerely,

Training: Timing is Everything

So you've got a good set of training manuals.  When is the best time to train everyone?  Naturally, as close as possible to go-live is preferred.  However, constraints with training facilities, participant availability, trainer availability, this isn't always possible.

An alternative is to train power users prior to go-live, less frequent users after go-live.  With today's increasingly complex, integrated, and enterprise level solutions, training anyone more than 2 weeks prior to go-live is likely a wasted effort.  They
will only need to be re-trained.

Did I miss something? What are some of your training preparation experiences?

Send feedback to robert@ajae.ca, I'll print it in the next newsletter!

Project Team Notable Quotes

" You're giving me a Raw Deal! " Dave
Schwarzenegger in 'Raw Deal'

It was this quote that started the infamous 'Raw Deal Cards' that I have humorously prepared for a couple of projects.  Often, with software implementations that require re-engineering business processes, there are groups that need to change how they do things more than others.  Not everyone likes change but as it says on the card:

" Bearer of this card must accept the 'raw deal' just handed to him/her for the benefit of the entire team and the success of the project."

Thank you to all my raw deal card recipients over the years.  Your sacrifice has made projects successful.

Do you have a notable project team quote?  Send it along; I can keep it anonymous if you like!
