Project Roles: The Project Manager
One could write a small book on the role of the Project Manager in IT projects. For this small space, I will share with you some things that come to mind when I think of the Project Manager role and what it means to me:
The Project Manager:
1) is the sole resource responsible for the success of the project. He/she relies on a good team, but ultimately, the buck stops with the PM. Like a goaltender in the NHL playoffs, the team succeeds when the goalie is on top of his game 2) spends 75% of his/her time communicating 3) manages the schedule, not the other way around 4) always reports project cost expectations to be 100% of budget regardless of anticipated savings; until the final project cost report 5) fosters accountability from all project team members; encourages them to take on tasks outside of their comfort zone 6) never assigns tasks to himself/herself that are in the critical path 7) is cautiously optimistic 8) spends a good amount of time educating team members, management, and other stakeholders as to why the project is run the way it is. 9) earns credibility with the team by setting an example for work ethic, quality, and conduct 10) finally, enjoys the role!
Did I miss something? Have some statements that you rattle around in your head or that you've observed in good project managers?
Send feedback to robert@ajae.ca, I'll print it in the next newsletter!

Project Team Notable Quotes |
"
The problem with this part of the data migration is that whoever
designed the legacy database, hyper-normalized the thing which is making my life
difficult." Gary
Ahh, the joys of data migration. I'm glad I wasn't born with an ability to write code, SQL scripts, etc. Better to leave that to the experts.
Do you have a great data migration story (good or bad!)?
Send it along; I can keep it anonymous if you like!
