Seeing Around Corners
Helping You Prepare for the Unexpected December 2011 |
|
Welcome to Seeing Around Corners
You know where you want to go, but how do you get there? When businesses are putting together their objectives for the year, they often look at "what." What will it take in capital expenditures, financing, strategic partnerships, productivity, etc.?
Some businesses are quite adept at putting together a solid business plan. They have targets or goals for each strategic area. Their budgets are tied together neatly, and a monthly income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement are ready to capture the results of the action.
There is one piece that is often left out. For each of those priorities, there is a one thing we don't always consider. It's the question of "who is going to be the leader who ensures we get there, and what skills do they need?" In the December newsletter, learn the importance of Integrating Leadership Development into your organization. It will save you from repeatedly asking "why isn't this getting done?"
Happy Holidays!

Filling in the Gaps When you are setting goals for a team, department, division, or business, what steps do you take? Obviously, you gather and analyze data to develop insights that will be used to prepare the goals. You develop a roadmap for where you want your business to go.
Once you know "what" you want to accomplish, you can let the team loose and go after it, right? Slow down for just a second. Before you turn it over to your team, you have to understand what the key players who you expect to execute these priorities need to be able to do. Sports teams do this all the time. In football, you need to have a quarterback who can manage the game and win it. A defense that can stop the pass. You get the picture. Managing personnel and bench strength is always at the forefront.
Business leaders don't take this approach as often as we should. Wouldn't it be much easier if we asked ourselves ahead of time "what skills are needed to grow our revenues by 15%," or "what must we do to ensure that our supply chain will deliver what we need, on-time, and at the right cost?" You get the idea.
Some capabilities will be unique to your specific goals. For example, if you want to grow your Asian business, someone experienced in developing partnerships and effective marketing techniques to that market will be required. For many of your other key players, focus on those skills that are always in demand. Generally, they include the following: 1. Communication 2. Developing Employees 3. Flexible Work Styles 4. Decision Making 5. Teamwork
By filling in the gaps in any of these 5 areas, you increase your odds of building a highly productive and positive team. Albert's "Theory of Filling the Leadership Gap" is pretty easy to understand:
Simply put... Integrating Leadership Development helps your business achieve its strategic goals, develop a leadership pipeline, improve bench strength, and provide a culture that will sustain you for years. |

Question of the Month: As we all know, the CFO usually has a real grasp of business conditions. As economic uncertainty lingers, their teams want to know what's keeping the "money guy" awake at night.
Here are the top concerns financial leaders are seeing in their respective companies. 1. Ability to maintain margins 2. Leadership & Bench Strength 3. Tools and skills required to forecast results www.BusinessIgnite.com |
