What is conscience? |
|
The News Of the World phone hacking scandal has brought the issue of conscience firmly under the spotlight. So what is conscience and where does it come from?
I went to two interesting talks recently; one about human rights at The Law Society by the organisation Liberty and another about conscience in Oxford.
Are we born with a conscience, is it a collective thing or something that we cultivate ourselves as individuals? Who's right about what is right and wrong and how do we know? Do we know we have a conscience when we feel guilty about something or is it an internal radar or compass that is just there inside of all human beings?
The cartoon character Pinocchio had a conscience illustrated by his nose that grew long when he didn't follow it. Wouldn't it be great if humans had the same obvious visual sign, especially in business, media and selling?!
A conscience is like an inner knowing, or a guide or voice on the inside of us. Common phrases used are 'having a conscience', being a 'conscientious objector', 'the 'voice of your conscience' and having a 'guilty conscience'. Conscience is an innate knowing about what is wrong that is instilled in us by parents, teachers or key figures in our lives. We all have our own individual values, belief system and moral principles, but is there such a thing as a 'collective conscience'' - something that is part of being human; an inner guardian of what is right and wrong?
