Why do people fear
career change?
|
There are a lot of people feeling very scared right now. Are you one of them? Whether you are being made redundant yourself or know someone who is, this is worth reading.
The prospect of being made redundant and not being able to get a similar job can feel paralysing. I did some research on LinkedIn and these were some of the responses to fears about career change. Which can you relate to?
- "Lose seniority, respect, position and pay that you had in your previous career. Fear you won't be as successful so you won't get them back, or not for a long time."
- "Any kind of change is stressful and burdened by uncertainty."
- "Toss up between fear of failure and fear of success."
- "Starting over again at an entry level position in a new field and everything that goes with it."
- "Fear of not succeeding; people become comfortable and career change is scary."
- "Starting from scratch, learning the culture, how to do the job, how to work with others."
- "Choosing the wrong career or job and not being able to go back to your former one."
These fears are what middle and senior managers in the public sector are facing and what you might face in the future.
Layers of management have been stripped out and are unlikely to be replaced. Employers are thinking twice about increasing headcount & research by YouGov shows that the private sector has reservations about employing public sector employees. The only option for many people may be a portfolio career or self employment. For those who have never had to market themselves, learning to do so is a steep learning curve and something really worth getting expert help with. The good news is that I can help.
"Excellent; invigorating and very helpful insights, practical advice and tools to use to enable me to move forward with confidence." Lesley Sopp
