How is worry created?

Man on type rope above city stress

Is it just me, or is there a lot of negative news about? Pensions, inflation, job losses, the cost of living going up plus lots of uncertainty. What occupies your worry thoughts? Worrying what people think of you is a common one. Worrying about being good enough another. Worry is like a squatter in your mind - unwanted and taking not giving. Worries, whether irrational or real, can really drag you down and worrying can become a habit. The good news is that you can choose not to let it.

Worry is caused by stimulus feeding your thoughts which then creates negative feelings, leading to worry and anxiety.  Some people naturally think more negatively than others and are 'worriers' but all of us can take action to improve what we feed our thoughts with e.g. cutting out watching the news or soap operas with negative story lines.  Most worries are irrational - about the past which we can do nothing about or the unknown future which we can't influence either. Worrying is a waste of time and energy and most people say they lack time and energy, so mastering this is an important thing to focus on.

Self-awareness plus strategies to minimise worry is absolutely something you can learn and it will improve your quality of life immeasurably.

Five tips to manage worry

Birds on blue sky

1) Keep a worry diary for a week to notice what you worry about then review what it tells you.

2) Allow yourself a worry half hour each day and the rest of the time choose not to worry.

3) Read Eckhart Tolle "Practising the power of now"

4) Focus your energy on what you can influence and don't waste your energy on things out of your control.

5) Manage your thoughts; notice your mental dialogue and create a mechanism to stop negative thinking in its tracks. E.g. when I find myself caught in repetitive negative thoughts, I sing the chorus of the Goons 'Ying Tong' song which makes me laugh and then I stop worrying.

Inspiring quote

"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens."
