Why have a career vision?
|
Change takes time and is uncomfortable. It is easier to continue doing the familiar than push out our comfort zone. I see change like a lawnmower mowing grass. If you always mow the same place, it creates a path. It takes time, focus and changing a habit to create a new and different path. This is how our brains work and it explains why we naturally resist change. New neuro pathways need to be created and this can feel unfamiliar.
Delaying a decision can have a huge impact. Delaying setting up a pension can have a big effect on how much money you have in retirement. Many people find making a decision difficult so put it off.
My career vision is to help more people, write and make money in my sleep to fund my retirement as women in my family live until 98! Some people are motivated by creating something new, for others it is moving away from what they don't want. Which are you? For me it is a bit of both and I redefined my career vision in 2008.
Last week, The Telegraph chose Energise as a partner with our career change e course. They are the biggest broadsheet and enable us to reach and help more people; 1.7 million people view their jobs and careers pages. A contact of mine gave me an introduction which shows the power of networking.
Do you have a vision for your career?
If I had not defined a career vision 3 years ago and played safe doing low paid associate outplacement work, I would not now be in a position to help all the people leaving the public sector or those fed up at work wanting career change.
I love Henry Ford's quote: "If you believe you can, you can, if you believe you can't, you're right." It hasn't been easy, far from it, but 'focus' is my middle name and blocking out time to focus on creating the future I wanted was a critical component.
Everyone has huge potential, even through challenging times - go on - liberate your talent.
